Excerpt from A History of English Poetry, Vol. 3 In the first volume of this History I expressed the hope that my work might be completed by the close of the last century. I have observed without surprise that by my failure to make good this anticipation I have exposed myself to some, perhaps not unmerited, reproach. But I venture to think I am not without excuse. Had it indeed been my purpose to make this History a mere record of biographical facts and isolated studies of individual poets, I might have been able to perform what I promised. But to accomplish the task that I have proposed to myself - namely, to trace through our poetry the growth of the national imagination, and to estimate the place occupied by each poet in a continuous movement of art - steady concentration of thought is required; and here circumstances have been against me. For to say nothing of my official duties, my election in 1895 to the Chair of Poetry at Oxford, which I could not have foreseen when making my first calculations, turned the thoughts of my leisure hours in a different direction, and it was not until the close of 1900 that I was able to resume my interrupted work. Soon after the year 1500, Lillye, the famous grammarian, who had learned Greek at Rhodes, and had afterwards acquired a polished Latinity at Rome under Johannes Sulpicius and Pomponius Sabinus, became the first teacher of Greek at any public school in England. This was at saint Pauls school in London, then newly established by dean Colet, and celebrated by Erasmus; and of which Lillye, as one of the most exact and accomplished scholars of his age, was appointed the first master. And that antient prejudices were now gradually wearing off, and a national taste for critical studies and the graces of composition began to be diffused, appears from this circumstance alone: that from the year one thousand five hundred and three to the reformation, there -were more grammar schools, most of which at present are perhaps of little use and importance, founded and endowed in England, than had been for three hundred years before. The practice of educating our youth in the monasteries growing into disuse, near twenty new grammar schools were established within this period: and among these, Wolsey's school at Ipswich, which soon fell a sacrifice to the resentment or the avarice of Henry the Eighth, deserves particular notice, as it rivalled those of Winchester and Eton. This volume explores the developing range of English verse in the century after the death of Chaucer in 1400, years that saw both change and consolidation in traditions of poetic writing in English in the regions of Britain. Chaucer himself was an important shaping presence in the poetry of this period, providing a stimulus to imitation and to creative expansion of the modes he had favoured. In addition to assessing his role, this volume considers a range of literary factors significant to the poetry of the century, including verse forms, literary language, translation, and the idea of the author. It also signals features of the century's history that were important for the production of English verse: responses to wars at home and abroad, dynastic uncertainty, and movements towards religious reform, as well as technological innovations such as the introduction of printing, which brought influential changes to the transmission and reception of verse writing.
