The American History and Encyclopedia of Music (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: William Lines Hubbard

Book Description
Excerpt from The American History and Encyclopedia of Music A dictionary of any language is properly supposed to contain all words in use in that language and also words which have been used in time past, but which have become obsolete. These Obsolete words are included in order that the development and history of the language may be studied, and, for this reason, they are a very important part of such a work. This should also be true of a musical dictionary, as many terms which are not in use at the present time are of great value in the study Of the history Of music and also for a thorough understanding of Old musical manuscripts. With this idea in mind, the list of terms given in this dictionary have been compiled, including not only obsolete terms but also as far as possible equivalents in the various languages. For this reason, the number of terms given in this dictionary is greater than that found in any other musical dictionary extant, numbering as it does, about fourteen thousand definitions. In all definitions, the aim has been to use only the simplest and clearest English, so that the definitions would be readily understood by the ordinary reader, as well as the most finished musician. This plan has been carried out, even in the definitions of terms related to such difficult subjects as Theory and Composition. The work contains a number of special features not covered in any other musical dictionary. Among them being, Dances, National Songs, Poetic Meters, Modes and the Parts of the Mass. Each of these has been defined under the general term and also each Specific dance, song, meter, etc., has been included in its alphabetical place. Book Description
Excerpt from A Bibliography of Early Secular American Music I regret that circumstances prevented me from visiting the Newberry Library, Chicago. I also wish to state that since this preface was first written I have added no titles except those which came under my personal supervision at the Library of Congress. While, therefore, my sins of omission may have become more numerous during the last three years, I hope that the book does not really show the wrinkles of age. I also had access to the famous library of Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker of Philadelphia, to the exceedingly interesting archives of the Hopkinson family in Philadelphia and to the manu scripts of Francis Hopkinson in possession of his descendant, Mrs. Florence Scovel Shinn of New York City. The American Music System (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Friedrich Zuchtmann
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780365292852
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
Excerpt from The American Music System This book is designed for the use of the higher Gram mar grades, and contains the transitional steps between the fundamental work done with books Nos. 1 and 2, and the advanced work awaiting the student in the first and second years of the High School course. The proper way to breathe, and the rational develop ment of the voice organs, have received due attention in the preceding books, and should not be neglected in any part of the course; but subsequent instruction in breath manage ment will be extended to the rules governing the time and place of taking breath - rules which are indispensable alike to the speaker and the singer. A thorough mastery of the intervals of the several scales, and the development of musical and poetical sentiment by proper exercises and songs having been accomplished in the course preceding, we here begin the study of the elements of harmony, in connection with the practice of part songs, giving the pupils an intelligent idea of the construction of chords, the transposition of scales, modulation, and such other matters pertaining to the staff notation as properly come within the scope of a complete music course for Public Schools.
