Excerpt: ...Tyne, well victualled and armed upon the sea; also nightly watehes by an' hundred persons on the walls of that town for its defence, and that of the parts adjacent, sustained i at the charge of the inhabitants. It appears ibid. p. 283, that the counties of Northum berland and Cumberland had suffered so much by the incursions of the Scots, that, at the request of parliament, the King rcmitted to them all taxes and debts due by them to the crown. 1 Faedera, tom. viii. p. 400. m Ridpath's Border History, p. 377. In 1408, this Henry, Earl of Northumberland, was flain at the battle of BramhamMoor, on the 18th of February. One quarter of his body was put up at Newcastle upon Tyne; but in the May following, with the other three parts and his head, it was taken down, and delivered to his friends, to be solemnly buried.-Dugdales Baronage, tom. i. p. 278. April 6th, 14o6, among the orders issued by the King for merchants to have the custody of the sea, and to provide certain men of war, for which they were impowered to exact imposts, one occurs addressed to the mayor of Ncwcastle upon Tyne '. A. D. 1409, and the four following years, William Aughton was mayor, and William Middleton, sheriff. In the year 141o, there was a great plague at Newcastle '. In the year 1414., Robert Hebborn was mayor, and William Middleton, sheriff. The year following the same mayor and flieriff continued. January 28th, 1414., an order was directed to the sheriff of Newcastle upon Tyne, to proclaim the truce between France and England, which was to continue a year, and in which the King of Scotland was comprehended P. A. D. 1415, while King Henry was preparing to lead his forces i into France, a conspiracy was discovered against his life, at the instigation of the French, ...
