Excerpt from The Historians of Scotland, Vol. 9 In the introductory notice prefixed to volume first, I explained the plan adopted in editing the work. This third volume brings it to a close. The ninth and last Book of the Chronicle is followed by notes and illustrations to the several volumes, consisting of various headings published in the former edition by Macpherson, along with his notes, glossary, and index, but the whole revised and considerably enlarged where it seemed requisite. As an appendix to the preface, I have now, as proposed, to subjoin two distinct articles. The one is an account of the author and his work; the other, a description of the various manuscripts of the chronicle that have been discovered and made use of in preparing this edition. In regard to the personal history of the prior of St. Serff's Inch, Lochleven, I regret that after long and diligent research so little information can be obtained. Excerpt from The Historians of Scotland, Vol. 2 In the proposed series of the Early Historians of Scotland, the Metrical Chronicle by the Prior of St. Serf's Inch in Lochleven conld not be overlooked. It belongs to the reign of King James the First, having been completed about the year 1426; but how long the author had been employed in compiling it can only be conjectured. We do not find the Prior's Chronicle mentioned by Walter Bowar, Abbot of Inchcolm, the continuator of Fordun in his Scotichronicon, yet it must, for at least a century, have been esteemed a work of historical importance, as may be inferred from the numerous transcripts of which we find traces, or which are still extant. In modern times Wyntoun's Chronicle was first introduced to notice by Dr. William Nicolson, Bishop of Carlisle, in his Scottish Historical Library, 1702. To whatever cause - the ignorant zeal of the 'rascal multitude' at the Reformation, or subsequent wanton neglect the loss of the major portion of the vast array of ecclesiastical muniments, other than those of a purely legal nature, that undoubtedly existed in pre-reformation times, constitutes one of the great misfortunes of our country. The Black Friars excelled all the other religious communities in the number and variety of the records which, under their statutes, they were bound to compile; and yet, but little is now extant from which any idea of their personal life can be obtained. At the head quarters of the whole Order at Rome, also, very little informa tion relating to Scotland has been preserved 1 but, in recent years, great literary activity has been evinced by members of the Order, and many of their records, so far as extant, have been published.
