Many of the subjects were still alive at the time of the original publication, so the majority of the biographies focus on the mid- to late-1800s. The sketches vary in the amount of information given, but generally they include the names of the subject s parents with relevant information about family heritage and immigration to the United States, the names of his wife, their children, and his wife s parents. The subject s professional or occupational history is usually recounted as well as his educational attainments, and his social, religious, and political activities.
