Book Description
Excerpt from The Handbook of Iron Shipbuilding The author being aware of the generally expressed want in all books published on the subject of Iron Shipbuilding - in many of which the theory of the lines, displacement, &c., are treated as if for the especial benefit of a Senior Wrangler at Cambridge, and utterly useless to the Shipbuilder and others, as the practical part is either very slightly touched upon, or entirely ignored - wishes to supply this void, without entering into theoretical investigations, which when written are seldom or never read. He has, during a long and varied experience, extending over twenty years in different parts of the United Kingdom, been at great pains to include in bis notes such information as is really useful, carefully eliminating what has been, during the rapid advance of the science of Shipbuilding, shown to be superfluous or obsolete. He has constantly kept in view two objects: - Firstly. To make this a useful handbook for the Shipowner, not only regarding the construction of a vessel, but also as to the cost of work in all the great centres of the shipbuilding trade in the United Kingdom.
