The Hakluyt Handbook provides a reference guide to the works of the Reverend Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616) and a critical evaluation of his achievements as a collector, editor, translator and author of travel literature. In Volume I, part one consists of a series of essays by specialists in the various field with which Hakluyt was concerned and attempts to evaluate his significance for historians, geographers and students of literature and society; part two comprises an analysis of the quality of his selections of material for his greatest collection The Principal Navigations...of the English Nation in a series of regional studies; and part three is a chronology of his life and writings expanded from that in G.B. Parks, Richard Hakluyt and the English Voyagers (1928). Parts four and five (in Volume II) analyse the contents and sources of Hakluyt's three major works Divers Voyages (1582), Principall Navigations (1589) and Principal Navigations (1598-1600), and provide detailed bibliographical material on the works with which Hakluyt was associated. A critical bibliography of secondary works and an analytical list of the publications of the Hakluyt Society, 1846-1973, complete the work. An index of books and articles referred to in the volumes is included. The Hakluyt Handbook has been under consideration by the Hakluyt Society for more than a decade and owes much to the late R.A. Skelton (1906-70). The editor Professor D.B. Quinn has had the generous co-operation of more than twenty members of the Society in its compilation. It is hoped that the volumes will not only have value to members of the Society and to many students of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, but that they will stimulate further research on Richard Hakluyt and a further refinement of our knowledge of Hakluyt's sources and bibliography. The Oxford Handbook of English Prose 1500-1640 is the only current overview of early modern English prose writing. The aim of the volume is to make prose more visible as a subject and as a mode of writing. The decades leading up to England's first permanent American colony saw not only territorial and commercial expansion but also the emergence of a vast and heterogeneous literature. In the multiple relations of writing to discovery over these decades, these texts played a role more powerful than that of simple recording. They needed to establish certain realities against a background of scepticism - the possibility of discovery, the lands discovered, the intentions and experiences of the discoverers - and they also had to find ways of theorizing their enterprise. Yet conceiving of the American enterprise positively or even survivably proved surprisingly difficult; the voyage narratives evolved almost from the outset as a genre concerned with recuperating failure - as noble, strategic, even as a form of success. Reception of these texts from the Victorian era on has often accepted their claims of heroism and mastery; through a careful re-reading, Mary Fuller argues for a more complicated, less glorious history.

Popular English travel guides from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries asserted that women who wandered too far afield were invariably suspicious, dishonest, and unchaste. As the essays in Travel and Travail reveal, however, early modern women did travel, often quite extensively, with no diminution of their moral fiber. Female travelers were also frequently represented on the English stage and in other creative works, both as a reproach to the ban on female travel and as a reflection of historical women’s travel, whether intentional or not. Travel and Travail conclusively refutes the notion of female travel in the early modern era as “an absent presence.” The first part of the volume offers analyses of female travelers (often recently widowed or accompanied by their husbands), the practicalities of female travel, and how women were thought to experience foreign places. The second part turns to literature, including discussions of roving women in Shakespeare, Margaret Cavendish, and Thomas Heywood. Whether historical actors or fictional characters, women figured in the wider world of the global Renaissance, not simply in the hearth and home.
