The Ground of Our Beseeching

The Ground of Our Beseeching PDF Author: Peter Sharpe
Publisher: Susquehanna University Press
ISBN: 9781575910802
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
"The Ground of Our Beseeching: Metaphor and the Poetics of Meditation describes the signature styles of meditation in three American poets, and shows how each generated language out of spiritual yearning. The author's inquiry in this area grew out of an interest in the interplay of creativity, language, and religion, and a need to know, as both critic and practicing poet, how metaphor arises, particularly in the context of poetry which hearkens after the sacred. How far, in other words, has metaphor taken some of our central poets - T. S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, and Theodore Roethke - in matters of belief? No other critique of American poetry, prior to this study, has systematically linked the idea of the sacred with the practice of metaphor. Nor has a compelling case been made, until now, for viewing meditation, a style of thinking close to prayer, as the source or "ground" of these poets."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Land and Literature in a Cosmopolitan Age

Land and Literature in a Cosmopolitan Age PDF Author: Vincent P. Pecora
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192593080
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
European culture after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 was no stranger to ancient beliefs in an organic, religiously sanctioned, and aesthetically pleasing relationship to the land. The many resonances of this relationship form a more or less coherent whole, in which the supposed cosmopolitanism of the modern age is belied by a deep commitment to regional, nationalist, and civilizational attachments, including a justifying theological armature, much of which is still with us today. This volume untangles the meaning of the vital geographies of the period, including how they shaped its literature and intellectual life.

Publisher: Liturgical Press
ISBN: 0814647421
Category : Religion

Pages : 144

Book Description
Desire is at the heart of what it is to be human. The power of desire, while embodied and sensuous, is God-given and the key to all human spirituality. Humanity is blessed with a deep longing that is infinite in extent and can only ultimately be satisfied in God. Befriending Our Desires portrays the intimate connection between desire and the spiritual journey. Drawing on Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, Christian spiritual classics (with some reference to Buddhist spirituality), poetry, and other literature, plus personal and pastoral experience, Philip Sheldrake explores the role of desire in relation to God, prayer, sexuality, making choices, and responding to change.

Life in Christ

Life in Christ PDF Author: Julia Gatta
Publisher: Church Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 0819233129
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
Explore how Anglican traditions enrich Episcopal worship. With its great heritage from English mystics, the Episcopal Church has been “spiritual” since before it was trendy, and modern Episcopalians have been in the forefront of exploring practices beyond Anglican boundaries. Yet, perhaps only rarely do they grasp the implications of the theology embedded in these practices or in the liturgies of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, which has shaped Episcopalians in this country with its emphasis on baptismal spirituality and the centrality of the Eucharist. Julia Gatta wants to change that with her book, Life in Christ. Applying her years of experience as pastor and spiritual director combined with her study of the spiritual wisdom of the past, she explores common Christian practices and their underlying theology through an Episcopal lens. In the tradition of Esther de Waal, Martin Smith, and Martin Thornton, with particular reference to scripture, the Book of Common Prayer, and the wisdom of the Christian spiritual tradition, she illuminates methods readers may already be practicing and provides insight and guidance to ones that may be new to them.

Pillars of Flame

Pillars of Flame PDF Author: Maggie Ross
Publisher: Church Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1596271825
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
Is the priesthood a power to be exercised, or a call to share in the broken Christ? Ross sets modern questions about ordained ministry in the Church within a much wider context, encouraging us to reflect anew on the relationship between administrative power and spiritual authority within the Church, and to redefine the priesthood. She minces no words in her critique of the contemporary Church, and goes on to propose changes so sweeping and fundamental that we sense what a truly Christian Church would be.
