Book Description
The St. Lawrence Seaway (the Seaway) is a 50-year-old bi-national (U.S. and Canada) transportation asset serving substantial manufacturing and service industries in both the U.S. and Canada. The St. Lawrence Seaway Develop. Corp. (SLSDC), a wholly owned gov¿t. corp., operates and maintains the two locks. In 2009, SLSDC initiated a 10-year U.S. Seaway Asset Renewal Program (ARP) for its navigation infrastructure and facilities. This report examined: (1) How the cost estimates in the ARP have changed from Feb. 2009 to Feb. 2010; (2) The extent to which the ARP covers all asset renewal needs; and (3) The steps U.S. and Canadian authorities have taken to coordinate their asset renewal programs. Charts and tables.

Great Lakes Shipping, Trade, and Aquatic Invasive Species

Great Lakes Shipping, Trade, and Aquatic Invasive Species PDF Author: National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on the St. Lawrence Seaway:Options to Eliminate Introduction of Nonindigenous Species into the Great Lakes, Phase 2
Publisher: Transportation Research Board

Category : Political Science

Pages : 228

Book Description
The Laurentian Great Lakes are the largest unfrozen reservoir of freshwater on earth, accounting for almost one-fifth of the worlds fresh surface water. They are vital to the economy of the Great Lakes region and to the quality of life of its residents, providing drinking water for more than 33 million people in Canada and the United States, supplying hydroelectric power, supporting industries, providing waterborne transportation, and offering a variety of recreational opportunities. Human activities have, however, imposed stresses on the Great Lakes basins ecological integrity, and one of these stresses the introduction of nonindigenous species of animals and plants is the focus of this report. The opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959 provided a route into the Great Lakes not only for international maritime trade but also for aquatic invasive species (AIS) carried in the ballast water needed by ships to operate safely. Ships ballast water is not the only vector by which AIS enter the Great Lakes, but it has accounted for 55 to 70 percent of reported AIS introductions since 1959, including that of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha).

From its first scene in a benighted Great Lakes river, where lake sturgeon thrash and spawn, this powerful book takes readers on journeys through the Great Lakes, alongside fish and fishers, scuba divers and scientists, toxic pollutants and threatened communities, oil pipelines and invasive species, Indigenous peoples and federal agencies. With dazzling illustrations from Glenn Wolff, the book helps us know the Great Lakes in new ways and grapple with the legacies and alternative futures that come from their abundance of natural wealth. Suffused with curiosity, empathy, and wit, The Accidental Reef will not fail to astonish and inspire.
