Book Description
Herod the Great, King of Judaea from 444 B.C., is known as one of the world's great villains. This notoriety has overshadowed his actual achievements, particularly his role as a client king of Rome during Augustus's reign as emperor. An essential aspect of Herod's responsibilities as king of Judaea was his role as a builder. Remarkably innovative, he created an astonishing record of architectural achievement, not only in Judaea but also throughout Greece and the Roman east. Duane W. Roller systematically presents and discusses all the building projects known to have been initiated by Herod, and locates this material in a broad historical and cultural context. Bringing together previously inaccessible material, Roller enriches our understanding of the enigmatic Herod and provides new insights into Roman architecture. Herod was instrumental in the diffusion of the Augustan architectural revolution into the provinces and was the first to build outside Italy such Italian architectural forms as the basilica, amphitheater, villa, and Italian temple. Herod's legacy provided a groundwork for the architectural Romanization of the east, influencing the construction of the great temple complexes and palaces so familiar from later Roman architecture. Herod, like Augustus himself, was not only interested in architecture but also in diplomatic and financial contacts among cities of the region. In addition to providing a repertorium of the building projects, this study is also an exploration of international relations in the eastern Mediterranean at the beginning of the Roman imperial period.

Publisher: Mango
ISBN: 9781642500905
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 378
Book Description
Purpose ─ Passion ─ Success! 8 to Great, revised! Positive attitude for positive changes: This groundbreaking and practical book offers a simple, yet powerful, 8-step process for taking charge of your life and achieving your dreams, using author MK Mueller's unique formula for "positive attitude". Positive attitude is everything for achieving greater happiness, health and success, yet no one, until now, has given the world a formula that is simple enough to remember and use on a daily basis. Mueller's "FGH" formula: FGH ─ Forgiveness of the past, Gratitude for the present and Hope for the future. In 8 to Great you will learn how Mueller's five "High-Ways" address the most common stumbling blocks to using FGH: High-Way 1: Get the Picture. It reminds us how to clearly see our dreams happening and "think it till we feel it." High-Way 2: Risk. Once the picture is clear, we must "run to, not from" and face our fears in order to move forward. High-Way 3: Full Responsibility. Rather than a burden, this is the key to freedom as we discover that we are the only problem we have and therefore, we are the solution. High-Way 4: Feel All Your Feelings. For those suffering with depression or rage, this chapter unfolds amazing insights into how Mad and Sad balance each other. High-Way 5: Honest Communication. When you're ready to stop getting defensive in arguments and be done with triangulation in the workplace, Mueller shows the way with down-to-earth examples of her clients' success stories. New level of self-esteem and well-being: In 8 to Great you will learn how the High-Ways provide a step-by-step process that helps you find greater happiness and success. The fact that Mueller has also created a widely-used curriculum for high schools based on her concepts is testimony to the fact that her methods are simple without being sugar-coated, and powerful without being pompous. 8 to Great will take you from wherever you are in life and provide a springboard into a new level of well-being and joy. Whether for yourself or someone you love, 8 to Great is an investment that is sure to bless and bliss your world.

Tamburlaine the Great
Author: Christopher Marlowe
Publisher: Broadview Press
ISBN: 1770483667
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 366
Book Description
Tamburlaine the Great, Part One and Part Two are the first plays that Christopher Marlowe wrote for London’s then new freestanding, open-air public playhouses. They trace the progress of Tamburlaine, a Central Asian leader, as he “scourge[s] kingdoms with his conquering sword” and rises to imperial power. The plays were a powerful beginning to Marlowe’s brief career as a public theatre dramatist: the brutally masculine and martial main character immediately captured audiences, and the plays were widely imitated and parodied. Even four hundred years later, Marlowe’s Tamburlaine remains a shocking and seductive figure. The introduction and historical appendices to this new Broadview Edition provide many avenues for readers to understand these plays, presenting other portrayals of Islam from the period, related lives of Tamburlaine from other writers, and material on Marlowe’s scandalous reputation.
