Book Description
The aim of this book is to make the Gospel of John accessible simultaneously to intermediate students of Ancient Greek and Latin. There are lots of resources available for the study of John's gospel, particularly in Greek, but this edition juxtaposes the Greek text to one of its most famous translations: the rendering into Latin by St. Jerome known as the vulgate. The running vocabulary and grammatical commentary are meant to provide everything necessary to read each page, so that readers can progress through the text, improving their knowledge of Greek and/or Latin while reading one of the key texts of early Christianity. For those who know both Greek and Latin, it will be possible to use one language as a resource to read the other. Meanwhile, the vulgate is a key index of how the Greek text was understood by early Christians in the Latin west. The Gospel of John is a great text for intermediate readers of both Greek and Latin. It is one of our best examples of koine Greek, the lingua franca of the eastern Mediterranean for centuries after the time of Alexander the Great. The sentence structure is very simple and there is a great deal of repetition in vocabulary and syntax. The Latin translation follows the Greek closely, translating word for word as much as possible, so that it is a fascinating exercise in translation.

Gospel of John, Gentle Greek Reader

Gospel of John, Gentle Greek Reader PDF Author: Greg Kane
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781722916541
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
Reading the New Testament in its original Greek is deeply rewarding but famously difficult. The Gospel of John, Gentle Greek Reader makes the gospel accessible to intermediate and advanced-beginner students of Koine Greek. This three-in-one volume includes 1. In the scholarly tradition of classical literature, the full text of the Greek gospel, with an English translation on the facing page. 2. A separate and complete Greek-English interlinear of the same text. When you want the in-context definition of a particular word, or help puzzling out an unfamiliar Greek construction, this section serves as a handy dictionary and syntax unraveler. These pages were developed from a scan of a scholarly work in the public domain. 3. When the Greek text prompts you to refresh your memory of, say, athematic middle perfect verb forms, the short reference grammar at the back of the book is there to help. This Gentle Greek Reader is not only fun to read, it will help you transition from grammar rules to reading comprehension. You will learn to read Greek fluently by reading Greek a lot. The interlinear section of this volume includes a first generation scan of a book printed in the 1890s. These pages reproduce the slurring, dropout and other printing artifacts of the original.

Each unit of the workbook contains three parts—vocabulary, study notes, and end-of-unit quizzes. The vocabulary is introduced as it occurs in the text. Study notes are designed to aid the student in translating the text and to supplement the teacher's help. End-of-unit questions help the student consolidate what he has learned.
