Waiting for the End

Waiting for the End PDF Author: Earl G. Ingersoll
Publisher: Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press
ISBN: 9780838641538
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
Waiting for the End examines two dozen contemporary novels within the context of a half century of theorizing about the function of ending in narrative. That theorizing about ending generated a powerful dynamic a quarter-century ago with the advent of feminist criticism of masculinist readings of the role played by ending in fiction. Feminists such as Theresa de Lauretis in 1984 and more famously Susan Winnett in her 1991 PMLA essay, Coming Unstrung, were leading voices in a swelling chorus of theorist pointing out the masculinist bias of ending in narrative. With the entry of feminist readings of ending, it became inevitable that criticism of fiction would become gendered through the recognition of difference transcending a simple binary of female/male to establish a spectrum of masculine to feminine endings, regardless of the sex of the writer. Accordingly, Waiting for the End examines pairs of novels - one pair by Margaret Atwood and one by Ian McEwan - to demonstrate how a writer can offer endings at either end of the gender spectrum.

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg PDF Author: Georg Christoph Lichtenberg
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 1438441983
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Admired by philosophers such as Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Freud, Benjamin, and Wittgenstein, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799) is known to the English-speaking world mostly as a satirist. An eminent experimental physicist and mathematician, Lichtenberg was knowledgeable about the philosophical views of his time, and interested in uncovering the philosophical commitments that underlie our common beliefs. In his notebooks (which he called his Waste Books) he often reflects on, challenges, and critiques these philosophical commitments and the dominant views of the Enlightenment, German idealism, and British empiricism. This scholarly collection of Lichtenberg's philosophical aphorisms contains hundreds of trenchant observations drawn from these notebooks, many of which have been translated into English here for the first time. It also includes a historical and philosophical introduction to his writings, situating him in the history of philosophy and ideas, and is supplemented with a chronology, suggestions for further reading, and extensive introductory and textual notes explaining his references.

But when her co-worker offers to help restore her work, little does she know her quiet little world will be turned upside down. Sympathetic to Deena's plight, Jack Karris offers to assist. He can't stand the idea someone would wound her so deliberately. But despite the desire that sparks between them, Jack can't wait to leave the small university town behind. Deena is his unwitting ticket to New York, and although she has zero interest in the project Jack proposes for her writing, he's convinced she'll also find a dream come true. When the truth comes out, and Jack's good intentions are revealed, Deena must decide is he the sincere man she's come to trust, or is he just out to steal whatever he can... including her heart?
