An African Family Archive

An African Family Archive PDF Author: Adam Jones
Publisher: Fontes Historiae Africanae
ISBN: 9780197263082
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 602

Book Description
This is a rare and detailed account of what it meant to individual Africans to be turned almost overnight into colonial subjects in the nineteenth-century. The Lawson family of Aneho, a small town on the coast of Togo, possesses a letterbook of 718 documents in English, and this is the first attempt to publish such a source in its entirety. The correspondence dates mainly from the periods 1841-77 (relating to the transition from the Atlantic slave trade to 'legitimate trade', mainly in palm oil) and 1883-85 (a period dominated by the efforts of King G. A. Lawson III to prevent Aneho and its surroundings from becoming part of a French or German colony). The volume also contains documents from the early twentieth-century, including some illuminating pieces of local historiography. The documents are framed by a comprehensive editorial apparatus.

Publisher: BRILL

Category : History

Book Description
Long regarded as disturbing remnants of the Atlantic slave trade, the European forts and castles of West Africa have attained iconic positions as universally significant historical monuments and world heritage tourist destinations. This volume of original contributions by leading Africanists presents extensive new historical views of the forts in Ghana and Benin, providing both impetus and a scholarly basis for further research and fresh debate about their historical and geographical contexts; their role in the slave trade; the economic and political connections, centred on the forts, between the Europeans and local African polities; and their place in variously focused heritage studies and endeavours. Contributors are Hermann W. von Hesse, Daniel Hopkins, Jon Olav Hove, Ole Justesen, Ineke van Kessel, Robin Law, John Kwadwo Osei-Tutu, Jarle Simensen, Selena Axelrod Winsnes†, Larry Yarak.
