Women Engineers Within an Organization
Author: Patricia Westlein Young
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Discrimination in employment
Languages : en
Pages : 96
Book Description
"The purpose of this quantitative study is to examine the topic of the under-representation of women in top management career positions. The number of women at the management levels has not kept pace with the increased percentage of working women. This research focuses on the desire to understand the factors responsible for the under-representation of women in scientific and technical career fields. The research tests female and male engineers‟ perception in the areas of opportunity, power, and inclusion within organizations. Using a sample of engineers, the results do not show significance difference between the effects of gender and opportunity, power, or inclusion. This was contrary to the results of recent research evidence. The sample respondents, less than 25% holding a management position, are indicative of these findings. This study reflects a need for further research in the subject of the under- representation of women in top management career

Dancing on the Glass Ceiling
Author: Don Olcott
Publisher: Atwood Publications
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 116
Book Description
In Dancing on the Glass Ceiling, Olcott, Hardy, and the contributors explore ideas about women and leadership, examining how they intersect with the growth of technology. In order to get a clear picture, they have explored the research plus interviewed women in various phases of their careers, as well as men who have witnessed the evolution of women's leadership responsibilities. The book addresses six major questions: Does the glass ceiling exist today, and if so, how has it manifested itself in the modern organization? What is the historical background and cultural importance of women in the workplace and how has that influenced women's roles in today's marketplace? What skills and talents do successful female leaders see as critical for women to succeed today? Are they the same for men? How has the technology revolution impacted leadership opportunities and challenges for women and men? Are women and men better suited for specific types of leadership roles? How can we build new organizational paradigms that center around the aggregate talents and abilities of women and men? Finally, the book challenges readers to consider these questions in their own work and within their own institutions and, as a result, to make decisions and plans for a new era.

Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars
Author: Eileen M. Collins
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1956763007
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 296
Book Description
The long-awaited memoir of a trailblazer and role model who is telling her story for the first time. Eileen Collins was an aviation pioneer her entire career, from her crowning achievements as the first woman to command an American space mission as well as the first to pilot the space shuttle to her early years as one of the Air Force’s first female pilots. She was in the first class of women to earn pilot’s wings at Vance Air Force Base and was their first female instructor pilot. She was only the second woman pilot admitted to the Air Force’s elite Test Pilot Program at Edwards Air Force Base. NASA had such confidence in her skills as a leader and pilot that she was entrusted to command the first shuttle mission after the Columbia disaster, returning the US to spaceflight after a two-year hiatus. Since retiring from the Air Force and NASA, she has served on numerous corporate boards and is an inspirational speaker about space exploration and leadership. Eileen Collins is among the most recognized and admired women in the world, yet this is the first time she has told her story in a book. It is a story not only of achievement and overcoming obstacles but of profound personal transformation. The shy, quiet child of an alcoholic father and struggling single mother, who grew up in modest circumstances and was an unremarkable student, she had few prospects when she graduated from high school, but she changed her life to pursue her secret dream of becoming an astronaut. She shares her leadership and life lessons throughout the book with the aim of inspiring and passing on her legacy to a new generation.
