Book Description
This one volume contains two pioneering works of outdoor adventure and study from celebrated naturalist John Tyndall. A physicist and educator by profession, Tyndall began visiting the Alps annually in 1849 to explore the glaciers: he climbed Mont Blanc several times, made the first ascent of the Weisshorn, and attempted to summit the Matterhorn. The Glaciers of the Alps, first published in 1860, and the following year's Mountaineering in 1861 combined his climbing feats and scientific observations in works that riveted the scientific world of his day. Considered classics of the Golden Age of mountaineering, these delightful books, written with an intelligent enthusiasm, remain absorbing today.AUTHOR BIO: Irishman JOHN TYNDALL (1820-1893) rose from humble roots and little education to become one of the most respected and influential scientists and philosophers of science of the 19th century, ranked with Charles Darwin and Thomas Henry Huxley. A man of diverse accomplishment, he invented the fireman's respirator and was the first to successfully tackle the question "Why is the sky blue?" Other notable works among his 16 books and 145 papers include Faraday as a Discoverer and On the Scientific Use of the Imagination.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Glaciers of the Alps,& Mountaineering in 1861 It is not in my power to do justice to Tyndall's scientific discoveries, which lie for the most part outside the range of my studies; but having been honoured with his friendship for many years, it is a pleasure to me, - and alas, few now living are able to do so, - to speak of him as a man, of the stimulating and noble influence which he exercised over all who had the privilege of his friendship. More than forty years ago - in the summer of 1861 - I had the pleasure of spending a short holiday in Switzerland with Huxley and Tyndall, Tyndall and I ascended the Galenstock, and started with Benen (who afterwards lost his life on the Haut de Cry) up the Jungfrau, but were stopped by an accident to one of our porters, who fell into a deep crevasse, from which we had some difficulty in extricating him, as Tyndall has graphically described in his "Hours of Exercise in the Alps." Again in 1865 I spent a fortnight at Zermatt with him and Hirst just after the terrible catastrophe on the Matterhorn, searching, or rather intending to search, for the body of poor Lord Francis Douglas, which, however, the weather rendered impossible. On another occasion we went together to Naples to study an eruption of Vesuvius. Nearer home I had the pleasure of many short expeditions with him; we attended several British Associations together, and belonged to the X Club, which dined together once a month, and which comprised also Huxley, Hooker, Herbert Spencer, Spottiswoode, G. Busk, Hirst, and Frankland. These men were all pre-eminent in their own departments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
