Book Description
I have often wondered how many other persons experienced a childhood such as I did with all the bizarre situations that occurred. I am certain that there will be a cause for doubt and skepticism when people read about it. However, they are all true. I dont wish to repeat any of them. Ultimately, I felt Morrison held a unique story of immigrants (mostly related) that held steadfast to their heritage; yet survived by the gifts of the land along with all the challenges and hardships. I also wanted to share in the beauty of Kinzua Country and the Dam that caused us to say goodbye to our homes forever. Kinzua was a quaint village set in a beautiful valley. Morrison (a minute village just a short six miles away) was forgotten in the demise of it. Now a prominent boating and outing area; it is known just for that; not for what it embraced before it was blanketed with the cool waters of the dam.

Against the Grain

Against the Grain PDF Author: James Haydock
Publisher: Author House
ISBN: 1456795228
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 401

Book Description
The book dramatizes the plight of abolitionist Quakers living in eastern North Carolina during the Civil War. As the war rages from 1861 to 1865, both Union and Confederate forces tramp through the region to destroy whatever they come upon and confiscate, as the war drags on, anything of value. A Quaker family entrenched in rural tradition and a faith emphasizing peace quietly resists the brutality of war but is made to suffer. As Southerners, Union soldiers see them as the enemy. As abolitionists going against the grain of Southern culture, Confederate soldiers despise and harass them. When they refuse to pay the exemption tax, their men are required to go into the army. Refusing to bear arms, their mettle is severely tested at Gettysburg and Petersburg. The book is about courage and endurance in the maw of adversity. It is closely based on historical fact, Confederate records, and Quaker tradition.

A Political Companion to John Steinbeck

A Political Companion to John Steinbeck PDF Author: Cyrus Ernesto Zirakzadeh
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
ISBN: 0813142040
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
Though he was a recipient of both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature, American novelist John Steinbeck (1902--1968) has frequently been censored. Even in the twenty-first century, nearly ninety years after his work first appeared in print, Steinbeck's novels, stories, and plays still generate controversy: his 1937 book Of Mice and Men was banned in some Mississippi schools in 2002, and as recently as 2009, he made the American Library Association's annual list of most frequently challenged authors. A Political Companion to John Steinbeck examines the most contentious political aspects of the author's body of work, from his early exploration of social justice and political authority during the Great Depression to his later positions regarding domestic and international threats to American policies. Featuring contemporaneous and present-day interpretations of his novels and essays by historians, literary scholars, and political theorists, this book covers the spectrum of Steinbeck's writing, exploring everything from his place in American political culture to his seeming betrayal of his leftist principles in later years.
