Book Description
Excerpt from The Gentleman and Lady's Book of Politeness and Propriety of Deportment: Dedicated to the Youth of Both Sexes It is to propriety, its justice and attractions, that we owe all 'the charm, I might almost say, the being able to live in society. At Once the effect and cause of civilization, it avails itself of the grand. Spring of the human mind, self-love, in order to purify and ennoble it; to substitute for pride and all those egotistical or offensive feelings which it gen erates, benevolence, with all the amiable and 'gen erous sentiments, which it inspires. In an assem bly of truly polite people, all evil seems to be un known; what is just, estimable, and good, or what we call fit or suitable, is felt on all sides; and actions, manners and language alike indicate it. N ow -if we place in this select assembly, a per son who is a stranger to the advantages of a po lite education, he will at once be made sensible of the value of it, and will immediately desire to dis play the same urbanity by which he has himself been pleased. Breastfeeding in American Women’s Literature

Breastfeeding in American Women’s Literature PDF Author: Wendy Whelan-Stewart
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040132626
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
Rather than rarities, literary depictions of women breastfeeding infants are more common in American literature than recognized. In some cases, readers have dismissed such portrayals as scenic background or strokes of verisimilitude. In other cases, we have failed to register them at all. By cataloging and closely reading scenes of characters breastfeeding across the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, this book decodes the beliefs of writers as celebrated as Willa Cather, Toni Morrison, and Louise Erdrich and as current as Camille Dungy, Maggie Nelson, and Torrey Peters. It traces in these authors’ fantasies and fears the consistent and sometimes competing cultural ideologies that accrue over decades and find expression in breastfeeding scenes. Despite the different historical and cultural expectations of what a mother should be and do, twentieth and twenty-first-century women writers have consistently singled out maternal pleasure—a mother’s privileging of her own desire—as the most important theme attending scenes of breastfeeding.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Character of the Gentleman The students of Miami University, in the State of Ohio, did me the honor of inviting me, during the past summer, to deliver an address on the even ing before their Commencement Day. I had never visited that teeming region of the spreading West, and gladly accepted the invitation. The address was printed, according to custom, and I was fur nished with a liberal supply of copies, not sufficient, however, to satisfy all persons who seemed desirous of perusing it. Repeated prepositions to republish it were made; but they would not have induced me to venture upon a second edition of so fugitive a composition, had not some trustees and many stu dents of our own institution desired me to do it. The Ladies' Book of Etiquette, and Manual of Politeness

The Ladies' Book of Etiquette, and Manual of Politeness PDF Author: Florence Hartley
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
In preparing a book of etiquette for ladies, I would lay down as the first rule, "Do unto others as you would others should do to you." You can never be rude if you bear the rule always in mind, for what lady likes to be treated rudely? True Christian politeness will always be the result of an unselfish regard for the feelings of others, and though you may err in the ceremonious points of etiquette, you will never be impolite. Politeness, founded upon such a rule, becomes the expression, in graceful manner, of social virtues. The spirit of politeness consists in a certain attention to forms and ceremonies, which are meant both to please others and ourselves, and to make others pleased with us; a still clearer definition may be given by saying that politeness is goodness of heart put into daily practice; there can be no _true_ politeness without kindness, purity, singleness of heart, and sensibility.
