Making Games
Author: Stefan Werning
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262361353
Category : Games & Activities
Languages : en
Pages : 171
Book Description
An argument that production tools shape the aesthetics and political economy of games as an expressive medium. In Making Games, Stefan Werning considers the role of tools (primarily but not exclusively software), their design affordances, and the role they play as sociotechnical actors. Drawing on a wide variety of case studies, Werning argues that production tools shape the aesthetics and political economy of games as an expressive medium. He frames game-making as a (meta)game in itself and shows that tools, like games, have their own "procedural rhetoric" and should not always be conceived simply in terms of optimization and best practices.

The Game
Author: Izzy Abrahami
Publisher: Tough Poets Press
ISBN: 9780578964317
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
This satiric fable about a fad that captures the nation begins one evening in a housing development, when an idle man happens to notice that the hundreds of windows he can see from his balcony form patterns of light and darkness. To escape boredom he creates a game, investing the patterns with meaning. Soon he and his wife become happily engrossed in his invention. They refine the game by observing what's going on inside the apartments behind the windows and creating a scoring system based on what they see. From this simple beginning, Izzy Abrahami spins off an extraordinarily funny and wise novel, caricaturing modern society. His two voyeurs are discovered by their neighbors, who panic over the fact that they're being watched . . . until they themselves discover what it is that the voyeurs are doing. Then they too become fascinated with the game; their fascination is echoed by the rest of the country, and the game spreads like wildfire.

The Games of Fiction
Author: David Gascoigne
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9783039106974
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 336
Book Description
This book presents the first complete overview in English of the prose fiction of Georges Perec, recognised since his death in 1982 as one of the most influential and innovative French writers of his generation. In particular, it explores in depth the nature of the numerous, and often astonishing, games and ludic devices which he used to generate and develop his material and to draw his readers into a playful interaction with his texts. Moreover this study situates Perec's writings as the culmination of a significant tradition in twentieth-century French writing, that of ludic fiction, whose evolution is traced from Roussel to Ricardou and the Nouveau Roman and Oulipo movements. In so doing, it seeks to answer two important questions: why did ludic writing reach such particular prominence in the 1960s and 1970s? What made its appeal for Georges Perec so special that it came to shape his whole approach to writing, and led this orphan of war and holocaust to invest literary game-playing with such a profound personal and cultural importance?

Between Literature and Science
Author: Peter Swirski
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773568379
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 203
Book Description
Through close analysis of Eureka and The Purloined Letter, Swirski evaluates Poe's epistemological theses in the light of contemporary philosophy of science and presents literary interpretation as a cooperative game played by the author and reader, thereby illuminating how we read fiction. The analysis of Poe's little-studied Eureka provides the basis for his discussion of Lem's critique of scientific reductionism and futurological forecasts. Drawing on his own interviews with Lem as well as analysis of his works, Swirski considers the author's scenarios involving computers capable of creative acts and discusses their socio-cultural implications. His analysis leads to bold arguments about the nature of literature and its relation to a broad range of other disciplines.
