Book Description
Events in Europe in recent years have shaken the world and made assumptions about the present and presumptions regarding the future irrelevant almost overnight. Within this torrent of change and climate of uncertainty, a dominating issue of debate has been the future of European security and, in particular, the role of the United States. This is not the first time, however, that these questions have been addressed. In the post-World War II era, 1945- 1948, the same issues were the focus of American and European attention. That period of transition culminated in a common defense system and an American commitment that has lasted over four decades. In the current period of transition and reassessment, the answers to similar questions are not foreordained, and the decisions made are likely to shape the future of European security and the American role for years to come. This paper builds on an historical examination of events in 1945-1948, and then focuses on the determining factors in the current and near term, 1990-1993. Contrast and comparison of the two periods yields identification of common factors which will interact to influence how the United States participates in a future European security system.

Book Description
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is the world’s largest, most powerful military alliance. The Alliance has navigated and survived the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the post-9/11 era. Since the release of the 2010 Strategic Concept, NATO’s strategic environment has again undergone significant change. The need to adapt is clear. An opportunity to assess the Alliance’s achievements and future goals has now emerged with the Secretary General’s drive to create a new Strategic Concept for the next decade—an initiative dubbed NATO 2030. A necessary step for formulating a new strategic outlook will thus be understanding the future that faces NATO. To remain relevant and adjust to new circumstances, the Alliance must identify its main challenges and opportunities in the next ten years and beyond. This book contributes to critical conversations on NATO’s future vitality by examining the Alliance’s most salient issues and by offering recommendations to ensure its effectiveness moving forward. Written by a diverse, multigenerational group of policymakers and academics from across Europe and the United States, this book provides new insights about NATO’s changing threat landscape, its shifting internal dynamics, and the evolution of warfare. The volume’s authors tackle a wide range of issues, including the challenges of Russia and China, democratic backsliding, burden sharing, the extension of warfare to space and cyberspace, partnerships, and public opinion. With rigorous assessments of NATO’s challenges and opportunities, each chapter provides concrete recommendations for the Alliance to chart a path for the future. As such, this book is an indispensable resource for NATO’s strategic planners and security and defense experts more broadly.

Future United States Role in European Security

Future United States Role in European Security PDF Author: James A. Moreno
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Europe
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
During the period 1989-1991, there were tremendous changes in the European security environment. The United States and its European allies are now faced with questions concerning appropriate security structures to meet the needs of post-Cold War, post-soviet Europe. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the debate about appropriate roles, missions and capabilities for U.S. military forces in Europe. The study considers security threats risks and uncertainties pertaining to Europe; examines the response of the Bush administration to new security realities; and assesses the adaptation of the Atlantic Alliance to the absence of a direct threat. Both the United States and its NATO allies envision a continued significant U.S. military presence in Europe. The study also focuses on challenges from both sides of the Atlantic to the planned U.S. military role in Europe. Western Europeans have demonstrated increasing independence and assertiveness as they move toward the establishment of a European union and a common foreign and security policy. Americans have become increasingly focused inward on severe domestic problems. The appropriateness and implications of three different potential U.S. military roles in Europe are examined. The study concludes that a continued significant U.S. military presence in Europe is a sound hedging strategy for the United States during a period of tremendous change. The study also suggests compensating measures to enhance the effectiveness of a more modest U.S. military force, should a larger U.S. military presence in Europe not be acceptable.

NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security PDF Author: Christensen, Carsten Sander
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1799871207
Category : Political Science

Book Description
The key role in the security policy of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is to prevent new types of asymmetric challenges and deal with the new architecture of the Euro-Atlantic security environment, including the control of weapons of mass destruction. In modern international politics, the growing militaristic policies of the states have created many dangers and raised the need for NATO to address new issues that the Alliance did not face during the Cold War. NATO and the Future of European and Asian Security reflects on difficult geopolitical and geostrategic conditions and reviews how new types of warfare have a drastic impact on NATO’s military and defense doctrine. This book provides the newest data and theories and contributes to the understanding of the transformation of the regional security environment in the aegis of the Euro-Atlantic. Covering topics including foreign policy, global security, hybrid warfare, securitization, and smart defense, this book is essential for government officials, policymakers, public relations officers, military and defense agencies, teachers, historians, political scientists, security analysts, national security professionals, administrators, government organizations, researchers, academicians, and students.
