Prior to Mrs. Bellingham's tenancy the building had stood empty for months. It possessed a somewhat unfortunate reputation as an unlucky house, and specula tors desirous of exploiting theatrical enterprises were rather inclined to give it the cold shoulder. A long record of failures was associated with the place, and three adventurous lessees had already made their appearance in the Bank ruptcy Court. From its position immediately overlooking the river, and the nature of its visitors during the greater part of the year, the house was commonly known as the Seagulls' Retreat.
