The First Landau Institute Summer School, 1993 PDF Author: Vladimir P. Mineev
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9782884491389
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
The papers from these proceedings have been selected for their timeliness and relevance to the modern physics community. Topics covered include theory of high Tc superconductors and superconductivity in heavy Fermion systems, turbulence, spin glasses, fluctuations and phase transitions, and electron-electron correlations. The educational emphasis should be valuable to the advanced graduate student as well as to many practicing researchers. In July 1993 the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics hosted its first summer school for students of theoretical physics. The book is the result of this collaboration by many of Russia's top scientists to bring an extensive modern treatment of their work to an international audience of students and colleagues in the physical sciences.

Introduction to Unconventional Superconductivity

Introduction to Unconventional Superconductivity PDF Author: V.P. Mineev
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9789056992095
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
Unconventional superconductivity (or superconductivity with a nontrivial Cooper pairing) is believed to exist in many heavy-fermion materials as well as in high temperature superconductors, and is a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The remarkable progress achieved in this field has not been reflected in published monographs and textbooks, and there is a gap between current research and the standard education of solid state physicists in the theory of superconductivity. This book is intended to meet this information need and includes the authors' original results.

The Essence of Turbulence as a Physical Phenomenon

The Essence of Turbulence as a Physical Phenomenon PDF Author: Arkady Tsinober
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400771800
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 171

Book Description
This book critically reexamines what turbulence really is, from a fundamental point of view and based on observations from nature, laboratories, and direct numerical simulations. It includes critical assessments and a comparative analysis of the key developments, their evolution and failures, along with key misconceptions and outdated paradigms. The main emphasis is on conceptual and problematic aspects, physical phenomena, observations, misconceptions and unresolved issues rather than on conventional formalistic aspects, models, etc. Apart from the obvious fundamental importance of turbulent flows, this emphasis stems from the basic premise that without corresponding progress in fundamental aspects there is little chance for progress in applications such as drag reduction, mixing, control and modeling of turbulence. More generally, there is also a desperate need to grasp the physical fundamentals of the technological processes in which turbulence plays a central role.

Creative Essence

Creative Essence PDF Author: Nina Freedlander Gibans
Publisher: Kent State University Press
ISBN: 9780873388191
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
Examines regional culture through the contributions of visual arts and includes a DVD Arising out of the Cleveland Artists Foundation's Dialogue Series, a 22-hour-long collection of forums held in cultural institutions and broadcast on National Public Radio, Creative Essence examines regional culture through an exploration of the distinguished contributions Cleveland has made to the visual arts and architecture. The Dialogue Series brought together a variety of people in the visual arts community to discuss the development of the region's creative life and environment, whether it be through architecture and city planning or through the industrial and fine arts. They shared their views and knowledge about how regionalism has long influenced artistic productivity. Their exchanges and ideas for the future are provocative and thoughtful. Richly illustrated with the work of well-known Cleveland-area artists and architects, past and present, Creative Essence explores the region's tradition, beginning with the "Cleveland School" of artists that was active and influential during the first half of the twentieth century. It moves on to examine the changes that occurred in the last half of the century and the development of the visual arts in northeast Ohio. Creative Essence is an important resource for understanding the significant role the visual arts play in our cities and societies and how they contribute to the region's quality of life. For those interested in regional history and for students of art history and the visual arts, this will be especially valuable.
