Book Description
Excerpt from A History of First Baptist Church, Garner, North Carolina: A Centennial Celebration, 1887-1987 Further, it is known that J. J. Bagwell lived in the second house east of Hayes Chapel. This house at 401 Old Garner Road was later owned and occupied by the P. K. Banks family from 1920 to 1975 when Mrs. Banks (mrs. Portia) sold it and moved to Raleigh. Mrs. Portia states that her family bought the property from the Bagwells and that 1898 is carved on the porch. Even If this date represents the building of the present house, it is likely the property ser\ed some role in the church's formation. As information was being gathered from monuments in the Hayes Chapel Cemetery, Mr. Garland Carroll, often the cemetery caretaker, came from his house across the street. He remembered a one - room schoolhouse situated on the east side of the church. This school building can join the other sites in today's speculation about the first location of Garner Baptist Church. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of First Baptist Church: Centennial Celebration In our effort to prepare a short history of First Baptist Church of Gastonia we begin by looking back briefly at the roots from which this church sprang. But in doing so we are trying not to look so far back that we lose sight of our immediate predecessors in the faith. Therefore we are focusing our attention upon the activities and accomplishments of our Baptist forefathers right here in America. We begin by taking a quick look at a few of the early arrivals of Baptist in this country. We' do not know who the first Baptist was to set foot on American soil. But we' know from American history that many of these early immigrants came here to escape religious persecution in the old countries. Some of them were Baptists. Others became Baptists after coming to America. Among these early arrivals were such Baptist leaders as Roger Williams and John Clarke. Roger Williams was born in Wales in 1598. He received his education at the Universities of Oxford and of Cambridge. He was a Puritan and a Separatist. He spoke out openly against religious intolerance and persecution. For this he himself became a victim of persecution. To escape such persecution he fled to America in 1630. Book Description
Excerpt from Centennial History of the First Baptist Church, 1813-1913 Among those noble men of the wilderness, one of the most noted was Elder David Irish, who preached the first gospel sermon in Cayuga County in 1794. He was born in Dutchess County in 1757 and died in Fleming in 1815. He removed with his family to Scipio in 1794. At that time the great section of our state west and southwest of Oneida and Madison Counties was an almost unbroken wilderness. Elder Irish was the first minister of the gos pel who raised the standard of the cross and preached salva tion by grace to the destitute population of this region. He was instrumental in founding some ten churches in as many settlements and baptized during his ministry persons. He had fortitude and perseverance well-nigh Paul ine. In 1799, being called with some of his brethren of the church in Scipio to assist in organizing a church in Phelps town, Western Hill, the roads at that time being wholly impassable for travel or horseback by reason of the great depth of mud and snow, he encouraged his brethren to under take to go on foot a distance of thirty miles, when all but one accompanied. These infant churches, struggling in the environment of pioneer settlements, rejoiced in their liberty as is evident by the circular of the Cayuga association which met at Palmyra in 1804: We have not to contend with civil rulers for equal rights, nor are we harassed by the civil officer and dragged to prison, or our hard-earned subsistence torn from us under the authority of human law, to feed a voracious and over bearing clergy, established by law and supported by the secular arm. Those dark times of superstition, bigotry and oppression, are to us, in some measure, over, and the bright mom of equal rights dawns upon us. The sun bf righteous.
