Book Description
Excerpt from The Financing of Public Service Corporations I have written this book as the result of experience in dealing with the financing of public service corporations, gained through my work with the Public Service Commissions of New York State and also in private employment. It has been my aim to offer in this one volume a comprehensive discussion of all the important aspects of public service corporation financing, from the inception of the enterprise and the issue of certificates of interest or indebtedness, to the expenditure of the proceeds and the permanent record thereof. I have intended it for the use of corporation officials and employees, representatives of the public engaged in the task of regulation, the bankers and brokers who are a necessary part of the financial organization, and in general for that part of the public which takes an active interest in the affairs of this most important branch of industry. In order to accomplish this purpose it has been necessary at times to dwell at length upon elementary principles and at other times to forego detailed discussion of some complicated problems. I offer the book, however, confident that these will not be considered as vital defects, since the thorough discussion of elementary principles is absolutely necessary to the placing of a proper foundation. If these principles are thoroughly understood and the possibilities of their application pointed out, the most difficult problems may be solved as they arise. Anyone who has attempted to discuss the law of corporate finance will realize how difficult it is to avoid, on the one hand, the tedious detail of constant reference to the statutes of all the states, and, on the other hand, the inadequacy of any general statement. Book Description
Excerpt from The Financial Policy of Corporations, Vol. 5 of 5: Failure and Reorganization Competition is most severe in businesses analogous to that of the railroad, where the things bought are never the things sold, so that the determination of the cost of production is entirely a problem of accountancy. Between the years from 1885 to 1893 most of the western transcontinental railroads failed. The reason was simple.5 Too many roads had been built to carry the traffic at remunerative rates. It was clearly a case of excessive competition brought about by unwarranted railroad expansion. A local public service company is ordinarily protected by the utility commission of the state in the exercise of monopoly powers, provided it renders good and reasonably cheap service to its customers. Competition is a relatively unimportant factor for such businesses, unless one considers the competi tive influence of two utilities - gas and electricity, omnibuses and street-cars. In manufacturing businesses the plea of severity of competition can be advanced but seldom as a funda mental cause of failure. A manufacturing business can cur tail production even at the expense of its organization, rather than dispose of its product at less than cost. It is true, com petition is alleged to be the cause of many failures, but the allegation is merely an excuse to obscure the deeper defect in business management. Too keen competition is invariably the excuse of the weak. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. New inven tions stimulate new wants, and these wants in their turn produce new means of satisfaction. In 1900, the production of bituminous coal in the United States was tons in 1908, eight years later, this amount had more than doubled, rising to tons. The production of pig iron, which accurately shows the increase in the construction of the plant of society, during the same period increased from tons to tons, and the production of steel increased in practically the same ratio.
