Church and Politics in a Secular Age

Church and Politics in a Secular Age PDF Author: Kenneth Medhurst
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198264545
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 428

Book Description
This book arises from a general preoccupation with the relationship between religion and politics and from a particular interest in the changing political stance of England's established Church. With the aid of surveys, interviews, and documentary evidence the authors have assembled anuniquely detailed picture of how the Church governs itself, of its leaders' attitudes, and of the institution's consequent impact upon public debate. Equally, they scrutinize the structural and ideological factors which limit the Church's capacity for influencing public discussion. Recent and wellpublicized shifts in the Church's official positions are explained by reference to the complex interaction of long-term social, political, and theological developments. The result is a volume which not only adds to our understanding of a significant yet little-charted area of English politicallife, but which is also intended to enhance the Church's own self-understanding.

God's Gentlemen

God's Gentlemen PDF Author: David Hilliard
Publisher: University of Queensland Press
ISBN: 1921902019
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
David Hilliard's God's Gentlemen, originally published in 1978, remains the only detached and detailed historical analysis of the work of the Melanesian Mission. Starting with its New Zealand beginnings and its Norfolk Island years (1867-1920), the work follows the Mission's shift of headquarters to the Solomon Islands and on until the beginning of the Second World War. The Mission, which grew out of the personal vision of the first Church of England Bishop of New Zealand, George Selwyn, formally defined its field of work as 'the Islands of Melanesia' although its activities were confined almost entirely to the island groups that now make up Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The Diocese of Melanesia was a fully constituent diocese of the Anglican Church of New Zealand from its formation in 1861 until the creation of the autonomous Church of the Province of Melanesia in 1975. Based on a wide range of sources, God's Gentleman is the inner history of the slow growth of an important and genuinely Melanesian church.

You hold in your hands a chronicle of history. The Moravian heritage dates back to the Bohemian Reformation in the fifteenth century. Theirs is a history of awakening and persecutions, as they took up the flame of passion for Christ even before Luther. Since their beginnings five centuries ago, the Moravians have always been marked by prayer, intense devotion and a great heart to bring the gospel to the world. The Moravians hosted a prayer meeting than ran uninterrupted 24 hours a day for one hundred years! As a foundational movement that helped spark Protestantism, and as the early spearhead of the modern missions movement, Christians today owe so much to their heart, zeal and faithfulness to God over so many centuries. Discover for yourself the power of the gospel to change a people, mold nations and take hold of destiny!
