Early Los Altos and Los Altos Hills

Early Los Altos and Los Altos Hills PDF Author: Don McDonald
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1439624925
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
Los Altos would never have existed if not for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Since the 1850s, Los Altos, Spanish for “heights” or “foothills,” was the name generally applied to the two ranchos (San Antonio and La Purisima Concepcion) between Palo Alto and Mountain View southwest of El Camino Real. In 1906, visionaries Paul Shoup, who worked for the railroad, and Walter Clark, a Mountain View real estate developer, saw the potential to turn Sarah Winchester’s ranch near Stanford University into an ideal San Francisco suburb. They would capitalize on new commuters—those who wanted to live in comfort in the country but work in the city. Slowly, a new town grew in influence well beyond its original Altos Land Company plat, realizing tremendous post–World War II expansion. Now two communities solidly embedded in Silicon Valley, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills share a school system, downtown shopping, libraries, and water system, as well as a history of interesting people.

Railways and Australian Identity

Railways and Australian Identity PDF Author: Keith Hallett
Publisher: Brolga Publishing
ISBN: 0645586412
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 95

Book Description
"The powerful headlight probes the darkness; voluminous clouds of black smoke billow from the chimneys, steam erupts from the safety valves, a ruddy glow lights the cab as butterfly doors are jerked open, flashing rods and driving wheels are highlighted by the running lights and overall there is now a triumphant beat." The railway is shown on maps as permanent way, however many lines are now abandoned. But the experiences of rail trips to distant places by train are, to many, deeply remembered events. This study acknowledges the essential economic effects of the rail network, but also celebrates the human responses, and when taken in overview, contributes to our continuing exploration of what it is to be Australian. Keith Hallett has spent equal parts of his career as teacher and historian, but from early boyhood in the Dandenongs responded to the magic of steam echoing through the hills. A love of rail has underlined his work, and continues with his volunteer work on the Victorian Goldfields Railway, passing this love of trains to his sons and grandchildren.

Confessions of A Steam-Age Ferroequinologist

Confessions of A Steam-Age Ferroequinologist PDF Author: Keith Widdowson
Publisher: The History Press
ISBN: 0750993456
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
ferroequinologist (noun) Someone who studies the 'Iron Horse' (i.e. trains and locomotives). From the Latin ferrus 'iron' and equine 'horse' + -logist As the British steam era drew to a close, a young Keith Widdowson set out to travel on as many steam-hauled trains as possible – documenting each journey in his notebooks. In Confessions of a Steam Age Ferroequinologist, he cracks these books open and blows off the dust. His self-imposed mission, that of riding behind as many Iron Horses as possible prior to their premature annihilation, led to hours of nocturnal travels, extended periods of inactivity in station waiting rooms, missed connections and fatigue. However, any downsides of his quest were compensated by the camaraderie found amongst a group of like-minded colleagues who congregated on such trains. This is a book that no self-respecting ferroequinologist should be without.
