The archeology done by government agencies is required by the Archaeological Resources Protection Act and the National Historic Preservation Act. One important goal is to preserve sites that are (or may be) eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and that are protected under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act. Agencies must consider the effect projects they conduct, fund, or authorize have on these sites. These projects are on federal, tribal, state, or private land, entailing road construc.
