Excerpt from The Fauna of Scotland: With Special Reference to Clydesdale and the Western District, Fresh and Brackish-Water Ostracoda IN undertaking the preparation of a Catalogue of the Fresh and Brackish-water Ostracoda, chiefly of the West of Scotland, I have had great misgivings whether at the present time it could be brought to a satisfactory issue. I have to express my thanks to Dr. G. S. Brady for his valuable assistance in all cases of doubtful species. I may mention that the new species in this Catalogue will be described and figured in a joint Paper by Dr. G. S. Brady and myself. Book Description
Excerpt from The Fauna of Scotland: With Special Reference to Clydesdale and the Western District, Fresh and Brackish-Water Ostracoda The Natural History Society of Glasgow, having resolved to publish Catalogues of the Fauna of Scotland, with special reference to Clydesdale and the Western District, requests the co-operation of all interested in Scottish Zoology. The following zoologists have agreed to draw up lists of the species in the various groups to which their names are appended. Any observers who can furnish information regarding the distribution of species, the variations which they undergo in particular localities, the altitudes which they reach, and generally any notes bearing on the subject, will further the object in view by communicating with these gentlemen, the lists being now in preparation. The Council will also be glad to hear from any zoologists (whether members of the Society or not) who would undertake to prepare Catalogues of those classes for which no compilers have as yet been obtained. As far as possible, the Catalogues will be drawn up on one uniform plan, and of the same size as the Proceedings of the Society, with which they will be issued to the members, although paged apart for future collection. A limited number of copies will also be printed for separate sale. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Wild Plants of Scotland and The Animals of Scotland

Book Description
"There must be a divine kindness directed towards our homeland, because most of our animals have a use for human life. We also lack those wild and savage ones of other regions. Wolves were common once upon a time, and even bears are spoken of among the Scottish: but time extinguished the genera and they are extirpated from the island." The Wild Plants of Scotland and The Animals of Scotland is a translation of two parts of Robert Sibbald's (1684) Scotia Illustrata. The most ambitious of Britain's early modern regional natural histories, this text drew on data provided by over sixty contributors to describe the state of nature in Scotland in 1684. This book describes Scotland as a paradise waiting to be harvested. Sibbald and his fellow contributors catalogue almost a thousand species of flora and fauna from the country, most of which were found to be useful to humans in some way. This is a rich source of information for conservationists, environmental and medical historians, conservationists and anyone interested in the natural heritage of Scotland. Book Description
Excerpt from The Influence of Man on Animal Life in Scotland: A Study in Faunal Evolution The animal life or fauna of a country is no fixed unit of occupation, established and unchanging, but, endowed with the plasticity of life, it carries in itself the imprints of many influences which have played upon it throughout the ages. The lectures contained in the following pages were planned to unravel one important set of such influences - those which radiate from the acts of Man - so that it might be possible to trace the different ways in which Man's power has worked and is working, and to realize to what degree a fauna of to-day owes its character and composition to his interference. With this end in view it was necessary to select a particular fauna of manageable compass, where the inquisition into Man's influence could be pushed to the furthest limits; and several facts pointed to the fauna of Scotland as best suited for the purpose. Nevertheless, I have not hesitated to refer to examples of Man's influence in other countries, wherever particular types have been strikingly illustrated, or where influences are seen at work which help to explain effects of causes long lost to sight in Scotland, or where, as in the case of counter-pests, modern science has created new kinds of interference which sooner or later are likely to be adopted in this country. A result of this enquiry has been to emphasize the instability and changefulness of a fauna, and a word may be said as to the general place of Man's influence in the sum of change.
