Book Description
[Abstract] This qualitative study employed the phenomenological model to research the question: "What is the experience of the repeat drunk driver shortly after sentencing?" The four phases of the phenomenological research model used in this study are Epoche, Phenomenological Reduction, Eidetic Variation, and Synthesis. A review of the current literature found considerable supportive research data that greatly enhanced the focus of this project. It was found that repeat offenders had personalities that were distinctly different from those who had experienced a first offense for drunk driving. The repeat drunk driver's experience is focused around the themes of fear and guilt, relief and shame, and loss of control. Repeat drunk driving offenders appear to accept their fates as well as their problems with alcohol, and they immediately start thinking about how to satisfy court orders as well as how to adjust to their new set of constraints to their freedom. This research suggests further study will be useful in understanding the use of alcohol to assuage the daily difficulties of life and more useful and productive ways to accomplish that.

Rich In Experience: A Memoir PDF Author: Charles B. Mikell, Jr.
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1329814622
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 467

Book Description
Rich in Experience is a memoir by the late Charles B. Mikell, Jr., Chief Judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals. Judge Mikell--or "Charlie," as many knew him--became one of Georgia's great jurists, but his path was long and winding. Rich in Experience takes the reader from Charlie's humble beginnings in coastal Georgia, through the hallowed halls of Princeton University, humid jungles of the Vietnam War, grey uniformity of Communist Czechslovakia, and rarified courtrooms throughout the State of Georgia. Charlie's stories about French kissing his high school dates, smuggling a Czechslovak president's silverware, and settling high-stakes disputes in Georgia law, among other things, are sure to intrigue and delight. He began work on Rich in Experience after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow. Throughout the following seven years, until his death in 2013, Charlie meditated and reflected on the rich experiences of his life and produced this compelling volume.

Unusually Cruel

Unusually Cruel PDF Author: Marc Morjé Howard
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 019065936X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
The United States incarcerates far more people than any other country in the world, at rates nearly ten times higher than other liberal democracies. Indeed, while the U.S. is home to 5 percent of the world's population, it contains nearly 25 percent of its prisoners. But the extent of American cruelty goes beyond simply locking people up. At every stage of the criminal justice process - plea bargaining, sentencing, prison conditions, rehabilitation, parole, and societal reentry - the U.S. is harsher and more punitive than other comparable countries. In Unusually Cruel, Marc Morjé Howard argues that the American criminal justice and prison systems are exceptional - in a truly shameful way. Although other scholars have focused on the internal dynamics that have produced this massive carceral system, Howard provides the first sustained comparative analysis that shows just how far the U.S. lies outside the norm of established democracies. And, by highlighting how other countries successfully apply less punitive and more productive policies, he provides plausible solutions to addressing America's criminal justice quagmire.
