The Encyclopedia of Money

The Encyclopedia of Money PDF Author: Larry Allen
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1598842528
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 545

Book Description
A comprehensive introductory resource with entries covering the development of money and the functions and dysfunctions of the monetary and financial system. The original edition of The Encyclopedia of Money won widespread acclaim for explaining the function—and dysfunction—of the financial system in a language any reader could understand. Now a decade later, with a more globally integrated, market-oriented world, and with consumers trying to make sense of subprime mortgages, credit default swaps, and bank stress tests, the Encyclopedia returns in an expanded new edition. From the development of metal and paper currency to the ongoing global economic crisis, the rigorously updated The Encyclopedia of Money, Second Edition is the most authoritative, comprehensive resource on the fundamentals of money and finance available. Its 350 alphabetically organized entries—85 completely new to this edition—help readers make sense of a wide range of events, policies, and regulations by explaining their historical, political, and theoretical contexts. The new edition focuses most intently on the last two decades, highlighting the connections between the onrush of globalization, the surging stock market, and various monetary and fiscal crises of the 1990s, as well as developments, scandals, and pocketbook issues making headlines today.

The City of London

The City of London PDF Author: Ronald C. Michie
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349123226
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
What is the City of London? The term is in everyday use but few are willing to define it. If pressed some will suggest that it means the entire UK financial sector while others point to a particular part of London - the Square Mile. Neither of these definitions is adequate because the City is both greater and less than either finance alone or a physical location. The author demonstrates that it is only by taking a detailed look at the City over the last 100 years that it can be understood.

The Public in Law

The Public in Law PDF Author: Haris Psarras
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.
ISBN: 1409497860
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
Bringing together established academics and new researchers, the chapters in this collection interrogate the operation of 'the public' in a range of different legal, illegal and alegal spaces. The key question which frames the contributions is whether and in what manner 'the public' operates as an interface between law and society, allowing the interests and opinions of the population at large to be represented and reflected in legal discourse, such that collectively generated imperatives may be imposed upon political and economic actors. Multi-disciplinary in its approach, the volume reflects an understanding that there is more to the role of 'the public' in relation to law than the conventional demarcation of the field of 'public law' and that this relationship is open to comment from a wide range of actors.

Provincial Stock Exchanges

Provincial Stock Exchanges PDF Author: W.A. Thomas
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136619437
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 361

Book Description
First Published in 2005. The provincial stock exchanges have long been an area of considerable neglect in the study of the history of finance and investment. They have always been dwarfed by the London Stock Exchange, but at least from 1836 onwards it was not the only market in the country. Those who have traced the development of the English capital market have been careful to point to the importance of provincial capital in railway promotion, yet while the role of provincial capital was emphasized, the praises of the 'vehicle' which helped to mobilize such funds went unsaid. It is difficult to see how provincial investors would have been prepared to commit so much of their capital resources for such purposes without some assurance of being able to liquidate their holdings fairly speedily, since for most of them London was at some distance. This book is an attempt to fill a gap—to trace the origins of the provincial investment 'vehicle' and its progress to the present day.
