Battlefield emergency surgery is saving lives in greater numbers than witnessed in previous wars. The evolution of U.S. Army Forward Surgical Teams (FST) and Combat Support Hospitals (CSH) has provided combat wounded soldiers with state-of-the-art trauma care. The FST, comprised of highly-skilled medical professionals, can be deployed to the leading edge of the battlefield thereby enhancing access to life-saving surgical treatment. These uniquely-qualified units have been developed to provide resuscitative, emergency surgery under specific combat conditions. As Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) enters a fourth year, FSTs remain deployed in significant numbers although major combat operations have concluded.
