Building Evaluation for Adaptive Reuse and Preservation

Building Evaluation for Adaptive Reuse and Preservation PDF Author: J. Stanley Rabun
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470108797
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
"This book is designed for architects and engineers who need to evaluate existing buildings for a new use or for continuing a current use. It details each step of the evaluation process using an easy-to-follow and easy-to-implement approach that greatly reduces the possibility of unexpected costs and setbacks. Moreover, the book covers every part of the building itself, from interior and exterior structures to systems and materials." "Illustrations throughout the book will help you visualize and perform key procedures. In addition, the authors examine building evaluation issues for structures of different scales, such as medium and small commercial structures and residential buildings." "Most important, the authors help you assess the financial viability of a proposed adaptive reuse or preservation project, helping you and potential investors decide whether the proposed project offers a desired return on investment."--Jacket.

Heritage Building Information Modelling

Heritage Building Information Modelling PDF Author: Yusuf Arayici
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317239768
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is being debated, tested and implemented wherever you look across the built environment sector. This book is about Heritage Building Information Modelling (HBIM), which necessarily differs from the commonplace applications of BIM to new construction. Where BIM is being used, the focus is still very much on design and construction. However, its use as an operational and management tool for existing buildings, particularly heritage buildings, is lagging behind. The first of its kind, this book aims to clearly define the scope for HBIM and present cutting-edge research findings alongside international case studies, before outlining challenges for the future of HBIM research and practice. After an extensive introduction to HBIM, the core themes of the book are arranged into four parts: Restoration philosophies in practice Data capture and visualisation for maintenance and repair Building performance Stakeholder engagement This book will be a key reference for built environment practitioners, researchers, academics and students engaged in BIM, HBIM, building energy modelling, building surveying, facilities management and heritage conservation more widely.

Five-Year NRHP Re-Evaluation of Historic Buildings Assessment

Five-Year NRHP Re-Evaluation of Historic Buildings Assessment PDF Author:
Publisher:

Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 75

Book Description
The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) 'Draft Programmatic Agreement among the Department of Energy and the California State Historic Preservation Officer Regarding Operation of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory' requires a review and re-evaluation of the eligibility of laboratory properties for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) every five years. The original evaluation was published in 2005; this report serves as the first five-year re-evaluation. This re-evaluation includes consideration of changes within LLNL to management, to mission, and to the built environment. it also determines the status of those buildings, objects, and districts that were recommended as NRHP-eligible in the 2005 report. Buildings that were omitted from the earlier building list, those that have reached 50 years of age since the original assessment, and new buildings are also addressed in the re-evaluation.

Nondestructive Techniques for the Assessment and Preservation of Historic Structures

Nondestructive Techniques for the Assessment and Preservation of Historic Structures PDF Author: Luisa Maria da Silva Gonçalves
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351686704
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 262

Book Description
New technologies play an increasingly important role in the analysis, monitoring, restoration, and preservation of historic structures. These technological systems continue to get more advanced and complex, for example: 3D digital construction and documentation programming, 3D imaging data (including laser scanning and photogrammetry), multispectral and thermographic imaging, geophysical data, etc. This book will present the latest nondestructive technologies used in the characterization, preservation, and structural health monitoring of historic buildings. It will include numerous case studies, as well as theoretical explanations about each of the methods and technologies used in each.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to propose "environmental sustainability" as an independent criterion in the evaluation of built heritage, to serve as a quantifiable indicator towards the goal of "sustainable development" in the urban context. According to the 2013 Hangzhou Declaration, a key basis for achieving urban sustainable development is by protecting a city's cultural heritage assets. However, since the introduction of "sustainable development" in the 1987 Brundtland Report, built-heritage conservation has not factored into environmental protection policies. Making this connection is the premise of this paper. Urban historic buildings are often centrally located and built using durable, local materials, reflecting local climate and site conditions. Their embodied energy can be calculated and compared with the environmental cost of new construction, including the impact of construction waste. Clearly, it is reasonable to assume that the adaptive reuse and improved energy performance of historic buildings can play a critical role in environmental sustainability. Developers, architects and urban planners, use tools such as LEED, BREEAM, Green Star, HK-BEAM to collect, analyze and assess the environmental sustainability of building projects with the goal to reduce impact and achieve sustainable development. Heritage conservationists have long argued that conserving heritage buildings can play an integral role in sustainable urban development. By merging the tools and approaches of these various sectors, it is possible to come up with a system that can evaluate heritage buildings and quantify their impact in the global sustainability agenda. The aim of this paper is to propose a framework to quantify the environmental sustainability of cultural heritage sites as a means to show their contribution to "Sustainable Development" plans.
