This study analyses the early outcomes, benefits, risks and challenges linked to the implementation of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), in provisional application since January 2021 and in force since 1 May 2022, for the EU and its Member States. Its chief focus is on the implementation of the level-playing-field provisions - in particular, those dealing with environmental and social/labour rights protection - and on trade flows between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK). The study first sets the scene, outlining the potential sources of tension in EU-UK relations that hinder the application of the EU-UK TCA. It then examines the EU evaluations of the TCA's implementation at national and regional level, while also presenting experts' views on how the agreement has been performing. The study also provides a longitudinal and visual analysis of EU-UK trade flows to explain the changes and continuities observed. It then analyses the European Parliament's scrutiny of the EU-UK TCA. It concludes by charting the possible paths for enhancing the performance of the EU-UK TCA, so that it can contribute to building trust between the two parties.

The Trade & Cooperation Agreement (TCA) is the treaty which regulates free trade and economic arrangements between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) post-Brexit. The treaty entered into force provisionally on 1 January 2021 and officially on 1 May 2021, and has governed trade relations between the parties since. This book brings together contributions by leading scholars in EU and international trade law, economics and political science to provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary analysis of the TCA. It contextualizes the treaty and identifies several emerging political, economic, and security challenges, which serve as the background to evolving EU-UK relations. Climate change is causing unprecedented damage to our ecosystem. Increasing temperatures, ocean warming and acidification, severe droughts, wildfires, altered precipitation patterns, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and amplification of extreme weather events have direct implications for our food systems. While the impacts of such environmental factors on food security are well known, the effects on food safety receive less attention. The purpose of Climate change: Unpacking the burden on food safety is to identify and attempt to quantify some current and anticipated food safety issues that are associated with climate change. The food safety hazards considered in the publication are foodborne pathogens and parasites, harmful algal blooms, pesticides, mycotoxins and heavy metals with emphasis on methylmercury. There is also, a dedicated section on the benefits of forward-looking approaches such as horizon scanning and foresight, which will not only aid in anticipating future challenges in a shifting global food safety landscape, but also help build resilient food systems that can be continually updated as more knowledge is assimilated. Relations between the European Union (EU) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are at a crossroads. After the derailment of the negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2008, the cooperation between the two regional blocs has remained low-key in a number of different areas, while the unprecedented changes that have taken place in North Africa and the Middle East, the common neighbourhood of the EU and the GCC, have not led to a renewed, structured cooperation on foreign and security policy issues.
