Hegel on Ethics, the State and Public Policy

Hegel on Ethics, the State and Public Policy PDF Author: Samuel Hollander
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040145965
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
Drawing on a wide range of Hegel’s writings, this book analyses the Hegelian position on ethical action. This position is systematically compared with that of Immanuel Kant, the comparison emphasizing Hegel’s insistence on a morality grounded in an ‘ethical’ context which essentially refers to the state rather than the agent’s private will. The argument proceeds to the relationship between the state and the various components of civil society, and to the interaction between the state and the individual, and feeds into the debate regarding Hegel’s status in relation to Utilitarian Ethics and liberalism. This book carries further the researches published in A History of Utilitarian Ethics and Immanuel Kant and Utilitarian Ethics and will be of interest to readers in the history of political economy, political science, philosophy and ethics.

Idealist Ethics

Idealist Ethics PDF Author: W. J. Mander
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0191065692
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
W. J. Mander examines the nature of idealist ethics, that is to say, the form and content of ethical belief most typically adopted by philosophical idealists. While there exist many studies of the ethical views of individual idealist philosophers there has been no literature at all on the notion of idealist ethics per se. Never is it asked: at which points, if any, do the ethical systems of all these thinkers overlap, and what relation, if any, do such commonalities bear to their authors' idealism? Never is the question posed: were you suddenly to become convinced of the truth of some form of philosophical idealism what revisions, if any, would that necessitate in your conception of the truth, nature, and significance of ethical judgements? The inquiry has two aims. The first is historical. From the record of past philosophy, Mander demonstrates that there exists a discernible idealist approach to moral philosophy; a tradition of 'idealist ethics.' He examines its characteristic marks and varieties. The second aim is apologetic. Mander argues that such idealist ethics offers an attractive way of looking at moral questions and that it has much to contribute to contemporary discussion. In particular he argues that Idealist ethics have the power to cut through the sterile opposition between moral realism and moral anti-realism which has come to dominate contemporary thinking about ethical questions. To be an idealist is precisely to hold that the universe is so constituted that things are real if and only if they are ideal; to hold that uncovering in something the work of mind makes it more not less significant.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Ethical Principle and Its Application in State Relations And this process which is true for the realization of one human soul, is the process by which the development of the whole human race is secured. This likeness of thought to thought and feeling to feeling, or the universality of thought and feeling, constitutes the bond in the human family, the unity of the organism, the organic sympathy which is the basis of the brother-hood of man. Man, in seeing the effects of his own deeds upon himself, learns to measure justice to another, and in his struggle with evil in his own soul in his moments of repentance and humiliation, and in his attempts at helpfulness to others, he learns true charity. However important may be the effects of an external act, the act as an element of the soul, as assisting to form the character, lies in the motive. The Christian Union, Dec. 1, '87, article by Dr. W.
