On March 24, 1974, over 2,000 life-size warriors made of terracotta were unearthed at Mount Li (Man 7). Today, there are estimated to be over 8,000 warriors (Dafoe). The Terracotta Warriors commissioned by Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi (221-206 BC) are arguably one of China’s greatest discoveries. The terracotta warrior pits consist of four pits, three containing warriors, horses, and other military objects while the fourth pit is empty. The First Emperor’s commission of the terracotta warriors served various purposes. The First Emperor’s spiritual beliefs and successful unification of China influenced the commission of the life-size warriors. Ancient Chinese funerary practices believed in giving the deceased the tools they would need to be comfortable in the afterlife. This practice can be seen throughout the burial grounds of Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi’s mausoleum. The First Emperor of China created his mausoleum and terracotta warriors to reflect the living life he once ruled and help him transition into the afterlife. Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi’s afterlife was meant to reflect his living one by representing the regions he once ruled through tomb décor and the terracotta warriors. The grounds where the terracotta warriors are buried serve to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi in the afterlife through the Taoist practice of geomancy. The combination of geomancy and life-like appearance of the terracotta warriors were most likely used together to protect the unification of China. The mausoleum and burial grounds serve as a representation of Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi’s accomplishments and a place of protection for his eternal sleep. Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi also commissioned the warriors to monumentalize the thousands of warriors who helped the First Emperor unify China. To fully understand the purpose of the terracotta warriors, it is important to know the role real-life warriors had in the First Emperors’ life.
