Book Description
A History of Portuguese Overseas Expansion 1400-1668 provides an accessible survey of how the Portuguese became so influential during this period and how Portuguese settlements were founded in areas as far flung as Asia, Africa and South America. Malyn Newitt examines how the ideas and institutions of a late medieval society were deployed to aid expansion into Africa and the Atlantic islands, as well as how, through rivalry with Castile, this grew into a worldwide commercial enterprise. Finally, he considers how resilient the Portuguese overseas communities were, surviving wars and natural disasters, and fending off attacks by the more heavily armed English and Dutch invaders until well into the 1600s. Including a detailed bibliography and glossary, A History of Portuguese Overseas Expansion 1400-1668 is an invaluable textbook for all those studying this fascinating period of European expansion

Crisis in Sri Lanka and the World
Author: Asoka Bandarage
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 311120345X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
This book provides a broad picture of Sri Lanka’s on-going political and economic crisis as the culmination of several centuries of colonial and neo-colonial developments. The book presents the Sri Lankan crisis as an exemplification of a broader global existential crisis facing more and more debt trapped countries, especially in the post-colonial Global South. The book's in-depth case study raises important questions pertaining to sovereignty and political and economic democracy in Sri Lanka and the world at large. The book also explores the emergence of the crisis in the context of the accelerating geopolitical conflict between China and the USA in the Indian Ocean. It ponders if the debt crisis, economic collapse and political destabilization in Sri Lanka were intentionally precipitated to the advantage of the Quadrilateral Alliance (USA, India, Australia and Japan). Moving beyond geopolitical rivalry, the book juxtaposes Sri Lanka’s political-economic crisis with the broader ecological crisis of climate change and sea-level rise. The book concludes with a consideration of the ethical dilemmas behind the debt and survival crisis in Sri Lanka and across the world. It points out a range of social movements and initiatives in Sri Lanka and the Global South which subscribe to collective and ecological alternatives and a Middle Path of sustainability and social justice.

Book Description
Unveiling the Dutch Footprint in Sri Lanka: A Journey Through History, Culture, and Legacy Sri Lanka's rich tapestry of history is woven with threads from various cultures. Among these, the Dutch presence, spanning over 150 years (1658-1796), left a significant mark on the island's landscape, society, and identity. This comprehensive exploration delves into the rise and fall of Dutch rule in Sri Lanka, unraveling the stories of conquest, trade, and cultural exchange. From Spice Routes to Colonial Ambitions: The Dutch Arrival Our journey begins with the early 17th century, a time when European powers were fiercely competing for control of the lucrative spice trade routes. The Dutch East India Company (VOC), driven by their thirst for cinnamon and other spices, arrived in Sri Lanka. Initially forming an alliance with the Kandyan Kingdom to expel the Portuguese, the Dutch gradually established themselves on the island's coast, strategically positioned for trade and future expansion. Building an Empire: The VOC Administration and the Spice Trade The Dutch established a colonial administration in Sri Lanka, focusing on securing a monopoly over the cinnamon trade. Their rule relied on a mix of direct control and collaboration with local elites. However, tensions simmered beneath the surface as the Kandyan Kingdom fiercely resisted Dutch attempts to expand inland. A Blend of Cultures: Dutch Influence on Sri Lankan Society Despite the political and economic complexities, Dutch rule left a lasting cultural imprint. Explore the fascinating blend of European and Sri Lankan influences in architecture, evident in Dutch forts like Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Burgher community, descendants of Dutch settlers, continues to be an integral part of Sri Lankan society. We will also delve into the subtle influences of Dutch on languages and cuisine, offering a glimpse into the cultural exchange that transpired. The End of an Era: The British Takeover and a Lasting Legacy By the late 18th century, the Dutch Empire in Sri Lanka began to wane, facing internal struggles and external threats from the rising British power. The capture of Dutch Ceylon in 1796 marked the end of Dutch rule, paving the way for British dominance. A Legacy Beyond Conquest: The Dutch Footprint Today While the Dutch colonial era ended centuries ago, their presence continues to resonate in Sri Lanka. This exploration wouldn't be complete without examining the complex legacy of Dutch rule. We will discuss the enduring impact on infrastructure, institutions, and cultural identity, acknowledging both the positive and negative aspects of colonialism. Uncover the captivating story of the Dutch in Sri Lanka. Explore the battles, the trade, the cultural exchange, and the enduring legacy that continues to shape this vibrant island nation.

Formations of Ritual
Author: David Scott
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 0816622566
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 334
Book Description
Formations of Ritual was first published in 1994. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Yaktovil is an elaborate healing ceremony employed by Sinhalas in Sri Lanka to dispel the effects of the eyesight of a pantheon of malevolent supernatural figures known as yakku. Anthropology, traditionally, has articulated this ceremony with the concept metaphor of "demonism." Yet, as David Scott demonstrates in this provocative book, this use of "demonism" reveals more about the discourse of anthropology than it does about the ritual itself. His investigation of yaktovil and yakku within the Sinhala cosmology is also an inquiry into the ways in which anthropology, by ignoring the discursive history of the rituals, religions, and relationships it seeks to describe, tends to reproduce ideological-often, specifically colonial-objects. To do this, Scott describes the discursive apparatus through which yakku are positioned in the moral universe of Sinhala, traces the appearance of yakku and yaktovil in Western discourse, evaluates the contribution of these figures and this ceremony in anthropology, and attempts to show how the larger anthropology of Buddhism, in which the anthropology of yaktovil is embedded, might be reconfigured. Finally, he offers a rereading of the ritual in terms of the historically selfconscious approach he proposes. The result points to a major rethinking of the historical nature not only of the objects, but also of the concepts through which they are constructed in anthropological discourse. David Scott teaches in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Chicago.

François Valentijn’s Description of Ceylon
Author: S. Arasaratnam
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131713320X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 407
Book Description
François Valentijn's Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien (Old and New East Indies) has for long been regarded as a primary source of information on a number of regions of maritime Asia. It is a veritable encyclopaedia, bringing together an array of facts, trivial and vital, from a wide range of contemporary and earlier literature, acknowledged and unacknowledged, and contains valuable excerpts from contemporary documents of the Dutch East India Company and from private papers. It is indeed a public archive. Despite this historic character of the work, it was never republished in full in a critical edition or made available in English translation. It has therefore remained relatively unknown and little read, except by the specialist wanting to quarry this mine of information for his particular purpose. This edition of Valentijn embraces the part dealing with Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in the fifth volume of Old and New East Indies. The island of Ceylon is one of three areas that has received the most detailed treatment in the work, with substantial sections devoted to geography, topography, society, natural history and the record of historical tradition. He also provides an almost contemporaneous account of the Dutch conquest of the island. For his description of Ceylon, Valentijn has had access to a variety of sources - Sinalese, Portuguese and Dutch - and has presented this material to us with his characteristic attention to detail. The volume now published with an introduction and explanatory notes is many things for many people: a geographer's manual, a naturalist's handbook, an anthropologist's collection of caste and custom, an antiquarian's record of tradition and a chronicler's narrative of history. One of the most informative writings on Ceylon is made available, for the first time, to the English-reading public.
