Book Description
In any relationship, there are two wills, two sets of desires, and two egos, as well as a united relationship that must be nurtured. In a marriage, this is especially complex. In The Essentials of an Honourable Marriage, Rev. Dawn Nation-Wilson shares the essential ingredients for developing a loving and supportive relationship so that both people can become whole. Husbands and wives will learn how to grow together with love and understanding, in healthier and less stressful marriages, instead of growing apart and despising each other. God ordained marriage and uses it to illustrate His relationship with His people. There is perhaps no greater tragedy than the violation of the sacred vows of marriage. Given that, this book teaches the benefits of caring principles that honour, restore, and celebrate the marriage union, discourages abuse, and prevents spousal burnout.

Women, Sex and Marriage in Early Modern Venice

Women, Sex and Marriage in Early Modern Venice PDF Author: Daniela Hacke
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351871455
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 400

Book Description
Women, Sex, and Marriage in Early Modern Venice is the first study to investigate systematically the moral policies of both Church and State in the age of Counter-Reformation confessionalisation in Venice. Examining ecclesiastical and civil lawsuits related to illicit sex, broken marriage promises and disrupted marriages of artisan and ordinary women and men, Daniela Hacke can convincingly show how central sexual morality was to the patriarchal society of sixteenth and seventeenth century Venice. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, the author skilfully reconstructs what gender difference meant in daily life, in courtship rituals, marital disputes, and in sexual relations. In the streets and in the courts, women and men fought not only over proper gender behaviour within and outside marriage, but also about the meaning of conjugality and of domestic patriarchy. Neighbours played an active role in mediating between distressed partners and between children and parents. Their interventions and perceptions reveal much about the moral values and the networks of support within a fascinatingly heterogeneous community such as early modern Venice. The study makes important contributions to the fields of gender history, social history and the history of crime and sexuality.

Unto a Good Land

Unto a Good Land PDF Author: David Edwin Harrell
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 1467425524
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 860

Book Description
Introducing a New U.S. History Text That Takes Religion Seriously Unto a Good Land offers a distinctive narrative history of the American people -- from the first contacts between Europeans and North America's native inhabitants, through the creation of a modern nation, to the 2004 presidential election. Written by a team of highly regarded historians, this textbook shows how grasping the uniqueness of the "American experiment" depends on understanding not only social, cultural, political, and economic factors but also the role that religion has played in shaping U. S. history. While most United States history textbooks in recent decades have expanded their coverage of social and cultural history, they still tend to shortchange the role of religious ideas, practices, and movements in the American past. Unto a Good Land restores the balance by giving religion its appropriate place in the story. This readable and teachable text also features a full complement of maps, historical illustrations, and "In Their Own Words" sidebars with excerpts from primary source documents.

Church Laws and Ecumenism

Church Laws and Ecumenism PDF Author: Norman Doe
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000192873
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Written by experts from within their communities, this book compares the legal regimes of Christian churches as systems of religious law. The ecumenical movement, with its historical theological focus, has failed to date to address the role of church law in shaping relations between churches and fostering greater mutual understanding between them. In turn, theologians and jurists from the different traditions have not hitherto worked together on a fully ecumenical appreciation of the potential value of church laws to help, and sometimes to hinder, the achievement of greater Christian unity. This book seeks to correct this ecumenical church law deficit. It takes account of the recent formulation by an ecumenical panel of a Statement of Principles of Christian Law, which has been welcomed by Pope Francis and the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, leader of the Orthodox Church worldwide, as recognizing the importance of canon law for ecumenical dialogue. This book, therefore, not only provides the fruits of an understanding of church laws within ten Christian traditions, but also critically evaluates the Statement against the laws of these individual ecclesial communities. The book will be an essential resource for scholars of law and religion, theology, and sociology. It will also be of interest to those working in religious institutions and policy-makers.
