Suitable letters of intro duction will gain the traveller easy admittance to Diocesan and Municipal archives, and to such of the Convent libra ries as have not been removed under the provisions of the recent laws Of Suppression of the Religious Orders. In the matter Of manuscripts, so great is their number and so varied their nature, that the task of classification becomes extremely difficult, and to frame a complete index is in some cases, as in that of the diplomatic papers in the Frari at Venice, absolutely impossible. The visitor must therefore often trust to the good nature and skill Of local archivists, and librarians, for information in special branches of study, for which he would else vainly search within countless tomes of puzzling catalogues.
