Multinational Enterprises and Industrial Transformation

Multinational Enterprises and Industrial Transformation PDF Author: Archanun Kohpaiboon
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Industrialization
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
MNEs have been involved in Thai manufacturing since the early 1960s but despite this significant involvement, their role in the industrialization process is a controversial issue. This book aims to evaluate the impact of MNE involvement in Thai manufacturing; and to recommend policies for maximising the benefits from MNE involvement. MNEs have been involved in Thai manufacturing since the early 1960s but despite this significant involvement, their role in the industrialization process remains a controversial issue. This book has three main foci: to evaluate the impact of MNE involvement in Thai manufacturing; to gain insight into the principal mechanisms by which MNEs contribute to the industrialization process and obstacles that prevent them from functioning more effectively; and to recommend policies for maximising the benefits from MNE involvement. The key hypothesis proposed by the author is that gains from MNE involvement are conditioned by the policy environment of the host country. The scope of MNE involvement studies uniquely covers not only FDI but also non-FDI. The study also draws together valuable conclusions and outlines policy lessons for other developing countries. "Multinational Enterprises and Industrial Transformation" will appeal to post-graduate and advanced undergraduate students in subject areas of international economics, industrial organization, economic growth, development economics and Asian economic development.

The Economic Consequences of Globalization on Thailand

The Economic Consequences of Globalization on Thailand PDF Author: Juthathip Jongwanich
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000538907
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
This book explores the impact of globalization, especially in the context of trade and investment policies, on the key economic outcomes, including innovation, productivity, employment, and wages, using Thai manufacturing as a case study. The book looks at the impacts of the shift of manufacturing share from industrialized to emerging countries and emergence of ‘global value chains’ (GVCs) as well as liberalization through the proliferation of free-trade agreements (FTAs) on key economic outcomes. The book highlights that globalization, through trade (including the parts and components trade) and investment, continues in Thailand amid the anti-globalization sentiment since the onset of the new millennium, especially the US–China trade war and the COVID-19 pandemic. Thailand has gained considerable benefit from trade and investment liberalization in various forms, including innovation, firm productivity improvements, and workers’ skills enhancement. Although the country has prospered in these areas, several further enhancements are needed in order to effectively harness the benefits available from globalization, including continued trade and investment policy reforms. Key policy inferences are provided in the last chapter. The book will appeal to those with an interest in international economics, especially issues relating to the economic consequences of globalization. It will also appeal to policymakers and practitioners responsible for international trade and investment regulations.

Book Description
The terms of foreign direct investment (FDI) is frequently considered as concurrently being one of the consequences and drivers of globalisation which result from the existence and actions of multinational corporations (MNCs). In the process of opening up economies toparticipate in some of the positive impacts of globalisation, most of the countries position themselves in respect of attracting foreign direct investment. Besides, the power to attract investment from abroad and its positive impact in improving economies is valued as an important ingredient of the path to successful economic growth and development. The major reason supporting the importance of FDI as a factor in economic growth, particularly in developing countries, is that it can bring to the host economy a number of benefits such as employment generation, business culture, technology transfer, and capital formation.
