During the early part of this period the army was small in number, but when the expected war with France seemed imminent it was considerably increased. Buttons for the infantry and general service were probably all of domestic manufacture while the yellow metal buttons for the staff, artillery and navy were largely imported plain and the design engraved or stamped thereon.
