And mast-arm (fig 3) posts, all equipped with Mazda C lamps. In 1859 there were 13 500 street lamps in service, all burning gas, except a limited number of oil lamps. Sev er'al other companies were organized in various sections of the city, and in 1873 there were 18000 gas street lamps in service; in 1879 the gas street lamps numbered 21 000. In 1877 approximately 2000 naphtha lamps were placed in service, but their use continued for street lighting only as long as the gas was not available, and in 1880 they were restricted to the lighting in parks and parkways. For this latter type of installation they were the accepted type of lighting unit until 1908, at which time their replacement by electric units began and has continued until the present time, when they are prae tically all eliminated. Excerpt from The Electric Journal, 1915, Vol. 12 In two principal cities, Hartford and New Haven, about one-half to two-thirds of the power used is supplied by the central station, and the remaining por tion is partly electric and partly steam or hydraulic power applied directly to the manufacturing opera tions. A large proportion of the power which is in dependently produced is incident to a few rather large factories; the great bulk of. The small users, as well as a number of large ones, derive their power from the central station. A very large proportion of the power used, especially in Hartford, is supplied as alternating current. The relatively large amount of electric power now used and the rapidity with which the electric service from the central stations has increased during the past few years show that electric power has proved very acceptable to manufacturing concerns. Excerpt from The Electric Journal, Vol. 15: January-December, 1918 The outstanding feature in the street railway field has been the stability in design of the present standard lines, permitting the railway companies to feel secure in establishing standards for future practice. The present standard railway motors and control outfits have been worked up to a point where improvements are extremely difficult, and the reports of their performance in ser vice are very gratifying. As in 1916 the outstanding feature of switchboard business for 1917 was the continued demand for switch gear for power stations of tremendous initial and ulti mate capacity. Initial capacities of 66000 k.v.a. And ultimate capacities of as high as 387 000 k.v.a. Are repre sented in installations projected and for which switch gear was purchased during the year. Improvements have been made both in the' major apparatus forming part of the switch gear and also in the smaller details. In the first class may be mentioned the completion of a number of 150000 volt outdoor oil circuit breakers of rupturing capacities far in advance of anything hereto fore within the limits of high voltage apparatus. With their guaranteed arc rupturing capacity, with voltage maintained, of 1 000 000 it is felt that the question of high-voltage power concentration is solved for at least sometime. There has also been the development of a successful and simple control equipment for auto matic rotary converter substations. One such outfit has been in successful operation for some time and others are under construction. To a very large degree the bulk and complexity characteristic of earlier control equip ment for such installations has been eliminated.
