Teachers comprise the greatest professional population of a school; they have the most contact with students; and they have perhaps the greatest influence on school climate. For this reason, teacher morale is a topic of great concern to public school administrators. Moreover, research suggests that poor teacher morale negatively affects student performance just as high teacher morale positively affects student performance. Research also indicates that teacher morale is influenced more by the leadership style of the principal than any other single factor. This study was designed to determine whether certain relationships exist between teacher morale and the following independent variables: (1) principal trust and (2) leadership satisfaction. Additionally, investigations were conducted to determine whether the aforementioned independent variables lead to increased student achievement. Information regarding teacher morale was collected from 65 teachers using the 2009 MDed - Multi Dimensional Education Incorporated (MDed) Survey at three 7-8 Initiative schools in a large suburban district in southeast Texas. It was the intent of this study to determine whether principal leadership and teacher morale are significantly correlated. The study also demonstrated whether or not teachers' and principals' perceptions of leadership behaviors contribute to student achievement. vi After analyzing the data, it was found that principal leadership behaviors do significantly impact teacher morale, and student achievement. Additionally, it was found that positive teacher morale and student achievement in the Initiative Schools influenced positive student behaviors, ultimately reducing student discipline referrals. Multiple interventions were put into place that led to the positive outcomes. The interventions, new principal leadership, ongoing intensive staff development, establishment of small learning communities, reduction of student population and low student to teacher class ratios, were the catalysts that lead to the Initiative Schools' transformational success, a transformation of high teacher morale, increased student achievement, and positive student behaviors.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to construct a theoretical framework explaining the connection between principal leadership practices and the phenomenon of teacher morale. The study also focused on principal leadership practices and the perceived effects that style has on how teachers feel about themselves and their jobs. First, a review of extant literature defined what constitutes effective leadership in school related environments. Second, the researcher defined teacher morale, both high and low, and how it relates to work performance. Third, the researcher attempted to explore how teacher morale and the leadership style of their principals relate. This qualitative study was conducted using interviews of teachers from 7 public elementary schools. Post interview journaling was also conducted by the researcher to capture immediate author perspective. The teachers were interviewed to gain their perceptions of leadership practices that motivate them to enjoy their jobs and work beyond status quo. With information gleaned from teachers, the desired outcome of this research was for principals to self-evaluate their leadership strategies and style and to find importance in building high teacher morale for the betterment of everyone. The researcher coded transcripts into themes, patterns, and the following theoretical constructs: (a) change, (b) leadership practices, (c) mandated testing, (d) stress, (e) communication, (f) acknowledgment, (g) professionalism (h) identifying with teachers, and (i) building community.

This study examined the degree of principal leadership style's effect on teacher morale in 14 public schools in northern New Jersey with a total of 138 participants. Of the 14 participating schools, 10 schools were categorized as elementary level, serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Four schools were categorized as high school level, serving students in ninth through twelfth grade. Factors guiding research included teachers' consecutive years of educational service, high-stakes testing subject areas, and a school's socioeconomic status to determine if they contribute to the relationship of principal leadership and teacher morale. Morale levels of teachers were calibrated using the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire (PTO) and the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI). The PTO measured factors affecting teacher morale. The LPI measured staff perceptions of principal effectiveness in relation to the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). The study was quantitative in nature and employed a correlational research study design technique. Survey responses were analyzed using an Independent Sample t Test to measure relationship strength. Outcomes identified from this research will contribute positively to the greater educational setting, whether through contributing to leadership training for future principals, informing professional development for seasoned vesteds, or aiding in the creation of future teaching tools. Study results indicate that teachers involved in high-stakes testing and teachers working in the lowest socioeconomic educational environments felt significantly different than teachers not exposed to these factors. This research exposes pertinent leadership characteristics that may prove vital to the development of current and future school leaders and aid the development of specific professional development opportunities. Classroom teachers continue to be an integral component to the success of any school and to the success of its students. Numerous studies indicate that the morale level of teachers can have an impact on their effectiveness in the classroom. Furthermore, the leadership of the school principal can shape the culture of any school and thus have a direct impact on teacher morale. This study sought to determine if a relationship exists between self-reported morale of school teachers and perceived leadership style of high school principals. Additionally, the study attempted to determine if a relationship exists between self-reported morale of school teachers and perceived leadership style of school principals with regard to the teacher’s experience level. The study was framed by Maslow’s theory of human motivation, which describes a hierarchy of needs where ones most basic needs must be met before moving on to the next level of needs. The research hypotheses were evaluated using a standard multiple linear regression analysis. Results of the study suggest that there is no significant, predictive relationship between teacher morale and a linear combination of principal leadership style and years of experience in education. Recommendations for future research include replication studies using a larger sample population, different educational settings, or a qualitative approach.

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of principal leadership styles on teacher morale. Two high schools in Pennsylvania participated in the study. A researcher-designed online survey with Likert-style rating scale, and open-ended questions were utilized to collect information. In addition, ten individual interviews were used to triangulate the data. The results of the study indicated that there was a relationship between certain principal practices and their ability to positively impact teacher morale. Participants reported the most influential principals were excellent communicators, trustworthy, knowledgeable in education matters, led by example, inspired their faculty and were highly visible throughout the day. These results imply that a principal's daily leadership practices play a vital role in positively impacting teacher morale at the high school level.

At the time of this writing, little research had been done regarding principals’ leadership styles and its effect on teachers’ collaboration in a Professional Learning Community (PLC). I completed a quantitative study in which I surveyed 66 teachers in a large school district in the southeast region of the United States about their principal’s leadership styles and their collaboration in PLCs at their schools. I found teacher collaboration in a PLC positively correlated with each component of the transformational leadership style. Similarly, I found there was one positive correlation and one negative correlation between teacher collaboration and the components of the transactional leadership style. Additionally, I found there were two negative correlations between teacher collaboration and the components of the passive-avoidant leadership style. I also found all components of the transformational leadership style were predictors for teacher collaboration while only one component of the transactional leadership style was a predictor for teacher collaboration. Similarly, only one component of the passive-avoidant leadership style was a predictor for teacher collaboration. Finally, I found the transformational leadership style could predict shared and supportive leadership, supportive conditions- relationships, and shared values and visions among the school. I also found passive-avoidant leadership is not a predictor for collaborative learning and application among the staff. Lastly, I found no leadership styles were predictors for shared personal practice and supportive conditions- structures.

The goal of this study was to examine whether the leadership style of principals affects teacher and student performance. The study includes an elementary, middle, and high school principal along with two teachers from each school who worked at schools that were in good standing from 2007-2011. Each school made adequate yearly progress (AYP) each year according to the No Child Left Behind Status History Report. This study examined one over arching research question: What do principals and teachers say about school and schooling? Data for this study was gathered through principal interviews, teacher interviews, and the results of an online Inventory of Leadership Styles (ILS) self-report and direct-report survey. The findings and actions by the principals in this study revealed that principals' leadership styles have an indirect effect on teacher and student performance. The leaders in this study set clear goals and directions built around high academic expectations. They worked to build faculty morale by empowering and motivating teachers. The professional development in their schools included professional learning communities in which teachers were provided time for collaboration. Instruction in each school is student centered and data driven. Teachers' motivated students while consistently keeping them engaged. Principals in each school took extra measures to engage parents and build community relationships. Principal participants utilized a combination of leadership styles. The results of this study suggested the need for a closer examination of professional learning communities and the strategies discussed within that improve student performance.
