Mental health disorders have become increasingly common in healthcare settings, especially in the Intensive care Unit (ICU), where most patients are critically ill from various conditions. However, despite that, most of such patients tend only to get treatment aimed at addressing the physical symptoms while neglecting the mental aspect of such patients. In that regard, the result of that is that such patients tend to continue to experience significant psychological distress from such illness while going through medical and physical distress. This proposed study is a Quasi experimental design study using the Mental Health Frist Aid Training Program (MHFA) as the training tool for Intensive Care Unit Nurses in aim to improve knowledge and attitudes towards mental health stigma. The MHFA will be provided to participants in the form of an 8-hour educational presentation by a certified MHFA instructor. ICU nurses will be given the Opening Minds Stigma Scale for Healthcare providers pre and post MHFA instruction. The scores from the pre-presentation OMS-HC will be compared to the scores from post-presentation OMS-HC scores to measure the effects of MHFA in causing a change in the knowledge and attitudes towards patients with mental illness. This study is significant to the nursing profession because it addresses the knowledge gap among nurses on the importance of mental wellness among ICU patients.

Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services. "Background: A therapeutic relationship is indispensable in the care of patients with mental illness because it is the foundation for their treatment, healing, and recovery. However, this helping relationship is difficult to establish when stigmatizing attitudes exist. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to implement an educational intervention for pre-licensure nursing students aimed at reducing the stigma of mental illness in order to promote therapeutic nurse-patient relationships. This in turn could improve the quality of care and health outcomes of patients with mental illness. Methods: Participants in a mental health nursing class attended four educational sessions and engaged in critical reflection. Attitudes were measured pre and post implementation using the Mental Illness: Clinicians' Attitudes version four (MICA-4) scale. Results: Findings of this EBP project indicate that an educational program is effective in reducing stigmatizing attitudes. The results showed a reduction of stigma by 20% compared to a target benchmark of 10%. Conclusion: An educational program using contact-based and critical reflection can be effective in reducing the stigma of mental illness among nursing students. Its integration in the nursing curriculum may be an important key in preparing future nurses to provide quality care for patients with mental illness regardless of the healthcare setting. College students with mental illness benefit from counseling services to overcome barriers to success. Resident Advisors (RAs) can refer students, but need education and training to decrease the effects of mental health stigma. The purpose of this study was to determine if anti-stigma interventions produced differences in mental health stigma in the RA population. In this study, 94 RAs participated in interventions involving education and personal testimony. Three published instruments were selected to measure mental health stigma. The Separate-Sample Pretest-Posttest Design 12c (Campbell & Stanley, 1963) was used to separate participants into two groups. Paired samples and independent samples t-tests were calculated to determine within and between group results. Results showed that public stigma and one factor of self-stigma was less from time one to time two. Effect sizes were mostly in the small to medium range. In addition, post-test scores were not sensitized by pre-test scores with any of the measures. Limitations include reliability of one of the instruments and generalizability to other populations. Implications for counseling center personnel, Residence Life staff, and university administrators are discussed as well as future directions for research.

Despite efforts to redress the prejudice and discrimination faced by people with mental illness, a pervasive stigma remains. Many well-meant programs have attempted to counter stigma with affirming attitudes of recovery and self-determination. Yet the results of these efforts have been mixed. In The Stigma Effect, psychologist Patrick W. Corrigan examines the unintended consequences of mental health campaigns and proposes new policies in their place. Corrigan analyzes the agendas of government agencies, mental health care providers, and social service agencies that work with people with mental illness, dissecting how their best intentions can misfire. For example, a campaign to change the language around mental illness by replacing supposedly stigmatizing words with empowering ones has made little difference in how people with mental health conditions are viewed. Educational programs that frame mental illness as a brain disorder have made the general public less likely to blame people for their illnesses, but also skeptical that such conditions can be cured.
