Handbook of Research in Social Studies Education

Handbook of Research in Social Studies Education PDF Author: Linda S. Levstik
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135601461
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 423

Book Description
This Handbook outlines the current state of research in social studies education – a complex, dynamic, challenging field with competing perspectives about appropriate goals, and on-going conflict over the content of the curriculum. Equally important, it encourages new research in order to advance the field and foster civic competence; long maintained by advocates for the social studies as a fundamental goal. In considering how to organize the Handbook, the editors searched out definitions of social studies, statements of purpose, and themes that linked (or divided) theory, research, and practices and established criteria for topics to include. Each chapter meets one or more of these criteria: research activity since the last Handbook that warrants a new analysis, topics representing a major emphasis in the NCSS standards, and topics reflecting an emerging or reemerging field within the social studies. The volume is organized around seven themes: Change and Continuity in Social Studies Civic Competence in Pluralist Democracies Social Justice and the Social Studies Assessment and Accountability Teaching and Learning in the Disciplines Information Ecologies: Technology in the Social Studies Teacher Preparation and Development The Handbook of Research in Social Studies is a must-have resource for all beginning and experienced researchers in the field.

Research for What?

Research for What? PDF Author: Barbara E. Moely
Publisher: IAP
ISBN: 1617351679
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Research on service-learning and community engagement has exploded over the past decade. It is a field now characterized by increasing methodological and theoretical sophistication, vast quantitative and qualitative studies, interdisciplinary research, myriad subjects, and the internationalization of scholarship. The papers in this volume were selected from nearly 100 presentations made at the 2009 annual conference of the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement held in Ottawa, Canada’s national capital. The conference theme, Research for What? emphasized fundamental questions, namely: to what extent is rigorous research uncovering best practices in, and demonstrating the positive results of, service-learning on teaching, learning and building better communities? The papers examine such themes through lenses that include the application of theory to practice, K-12 and university-based service-learning, interdisciplinary initiatives, and international service-learning. The introduction provides an overview of the very recent, but remarkable, growth of service-learning in Canada, and the conclusion, written by the recipient of the Association’s annual Distinguished Researcher Award, discusses major developments, and continuing challenges, in service-learning research.

Education and the Law

Education and the Law PDF Author: Gerald Stowbridge
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134878257
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 285

Book Description
This edited collection addresses a subject which is topical not only in Britain, where there has been a spate of laws and regulations affecting the structure and content of education, but also in developed and developing countries, where the overriding motivation in many cases has been to raise economic performance. The first part of the book deals with the way legislation affects education and training both directly and tangentially, and how the law through its influence on such things as participation rates, certification and employer involvement can affect the level and degree of economic activity. Contributors examine the education systems of the USA, Kenya, Japan, Germany, Nigeria, Britain and France to illustrate the interdependence of the elements involved. The second part focuses on the concept of curriculum control. Chapters take a comparative approach to what is taught in the classroom and how the implementation of legislation affects all aspects of a country's education system.
