Book Description
A counter-flow propane/air diffusion flame ([straight phi] = 1.79) is used for a fundamental analysis of the effects of oxygenated additives on soot precursor formation. Experiments are conducted at atmospheric pressure using a quartz micro-probe for sampling and Gas Chromatography for gas sample analysis. C1-C6 species have been identified and measured. The oxygenated additives dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and ethanol are added to the fuel stream keeping the total volumetric flow rate constant Results show 10 vol% DMC significantly reduces acetylene, benzene and other flame pyrolysis products. Ethanol addition (10 vol%) shows instead more modest reductions. Peak acetylene and benzene levels decrease as the additive dosage increases for both ethanol and DMC. The additive's effect on adiabatic flame temperature and fuel stream carbon content does not correlate significantly with acetylene levels. However, there does appear to be a linear relationship between oxygen content and acetylene concentrations as well as C-C content and acetylene concentrations.

Investigations into the Combustion Kinetics of Several Novel Oxygenated Fuels

Investigations into the Combustion Kinetics of Several Novel Oxygenated Fuels PDF Author: Wenyu Sun
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9819945100
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 178

Book Description
In this thesis, attention was paid to several novel oxygenated fuels—carbonates, polyethers and ketones. Combustion kinetic investigations were performed for typical representative compounds, including dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, cyclopentanone, 3-pentanone, 1,2-dimethoxyethane and dimethoxymethane. For experiments, suitable diagnostic techniques were used to measure the detailed speciation information of the target fuels under different conditions. For kinetic modeling, rate coefficients for crucial elementary reactions were obtained through high-level theoretical calculations. Based on that, validated kinetic models with good predictive performances were developed. On the basis of experimental measurements and model interpretations, this work highlighted two important combustion characteristics regarding the practical use: the pollutant formation and the ignition performance. Besides, the correlation between oxygen-containing functional groups and the aforementioned combustion characteristics was revealed. To reveal the potential interactions between the reaction networks of oxygenated additives and the hydrocarbon base fuels during combustion. Chemical structures of laminar premixed flames fueled by binary fuels were measured, and by changing the initial fuel compositions, the addition effects of the oxygenates on the fuel consumption and pollutant formation behaviors were explored. It was found that complicated chemical interactions do not exist in the reaction networks under the investigated conditions.

Chemical Mechanistic Approaches for the Suppression of Soot Formation in the Combustion of High Energy Density Fuels

Chemical Mechanistic Approaches for the Suppression of Soot Formation in the Combustion of High Energy Density Fuels PDF Author:

Book Description
Significant advantages can be gained by the use of high energy density fuels in volume limited applications. However, excessive soot formation that accompanies the combustion of these fuels presently limits their application. Fuel additive approaches prove attractive as they require minimal modifications to already existing equipment. In the present study, a variety of flame configurations were used to study the additive effects on soot formation. Through tests conducted on laminar diffusion flames carbon disulfide (CS2) and methanol (CH3OH) were found to be the most effective soot suppressants. Chemical interaction by either additive was found to far surpass the physical influences. However, the exact nature of the chemical action could not be established with the current set of experiments. Additionally, both of these additives were found to reduce soot formation in at least one high energy density fuel - quadricyclane (C7H8). To further validate this approach, studies were conducted using droplet flames and high-pressure spray flames.
