Impact of Post-orthodontic Dental Occlusion on Masticatory Performance

Impact of Post-orthodontic Dental Occlusion on Masticatory Performance PDF Author: Jocelyne Shim

Book Description
Whether precise orthodontic detailing of occlusion impacts masticatory function is unknown. Here, we aim to assess the impact of post-orthodontic occlusion on masticatory performance. Fifty-four adults who completed orthodontic treatment were categorized into two groups using the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) model grading system: one meeting ABO standards (ABO, N=29), the other failing to meet them (non-ABO, N=25). Surface electromyography and experimental chewing tests of silicone food were used to assess jaw muscle coordination during static and dynamic tests, and masticatory performance. Visual analogue scales were used for self-assessment of chewing function. The ABO group had more symmetric activation of the temporalis muscle during clenching (P=0.016) and chewed at a slower rate (P=0.030). Median particle size, broadness of particle distribution, and self-rating of chewing function did not differ between groups (all P>0.05). This study demonstrated that meeting ABO standards contributes to more balanced activation of jaw muscles during function.

Oral Physiology and Occlusion

Oral Physiology and Occlusion PDF Author: James H. Perryman
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483150666
Category : Nature

Pages : 271

Book Description
Oral Physiology and Occlusion: An International Symposium contains the proceeding of the ""Bite Centennial"" conceived as part of the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration of the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The symposium aims to provide a broad based review of the ""state of science"" of oral physiology and occlusion. Organized into 13 chapters, this book first discusses the effects of lesions of jaw muscle spindle afferents on mastication and regulation of the incisal biting force in monkeys. Subsequent chapters describe the occlusal forces and mandibular movements; muscle spindles and tooth mechano-receptors in the control of mastication; relationship between integrated EMG and tension in opening of the mandible; and sensory regulation of brain stem motoneurons. Other chapters explain electrophysiological properties of nerve endings in teeth; measurement of the behavioral aspects of pain; mechanisms of oral-facial pain; hemodynamic considerations of oral-facial physiology.

Understanding Masticatory Function in Unilateral Crossbites

Understanding Masticatory Function in Unilateral Crossbites PDF Author: Maria Grazia Piancino
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118971892
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Unilateral posterior crossbite is a problem often seen in orthodontic practice, and properly understanding chewing patterns will lead to the most effective treatment program. Drawing on their research and available literature, Drs. Piancino and Kyrkanides present a fascinating look at chewing cycles and their role in the functional treatment of unilateral posterior crossbite. Describes the physiology and pathology of chewing patterns and muscular activation in humans Explains chewing patterns and muscular coordination, and their influence on the growth and harmony of the stomatognathic system Clinical instruction for checking and correcting masticatory function and functional asymmetry in order to prevent the relapse of the malocclusion Clinical cases walk readers through the treatment of seven crossbites

Oral Processing and Consumer Perception

Oral Processing and Consumer Perception PDF Author: Bettina Wolf
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 1839160632
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 361

Book Description
This is the first book for some years that provides a comprehensive overview of food oral processing. It includes fundamental chapters at the beginning of each section to aid the understanding of the later more specific oral processing chapters. The field is rapidly developing, and the systems researched in the context of food oral processing become increasingly complex and therefore the fundamental sections include information on how to build complex food systems. The main coverage includes the biomechanics of swallowing, the biophysics of mouthfeel and texture as well as the biochemistry of flavours and how food microstructures can be manipulated. It contains up-to-date research findings, looking at consumer preferences and the response to these preferences by food process technologists and those developing new foods. The book will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers in academia and industry who may be from very diverse backgrounds ranging from food process engineers to functional food developers and professionals concerned with swallowing and taste disorders.
