Financial Structures and Economic Outcomes

Financial Structures and Economic Outcomes PDF Author: Mr.Tom Gole
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1484394763
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 29

Book Description
This paper investigates the potential relationships between financial structures and economic outcomes. The empirical results that withstand a battery of methods suggest that some financial intermediation structures are likely to be more closely related to positive economic outcomes than others. For instance, protective financial buffers within institutions have been associated with better economic performance, and a domestic financial system that is dominated by some types of nontraditional bank intermediation or that has a high proportion of foreign banks has in some cases been associated with adverse economic outcomes, especially during the financial crisis. The results also suggest that there may be trade-offs between beneficial effects on growth and stability of some financial structures. For example, the positive association of financial buffers with growth can diminish above a certain, relatively high, threshold—a too-safe system may limit the available funds for credit and hence growth.

Finance and Growth

Book Description
"This paper reviews, appraises, and critiques theoretical and empirical research on the connections between the operation of the financial system and economic growth. While subject to ample qualifications and countervailing views, the preponderance of evidence suggests that both financial intermediaries and markets matter for growth and that reverse causality alone is not driving this relationship. Furthermore, theory and evidence imply that better developed financial systems ease external financing constraints facing firms, which illuminates one mechanism through which financial development influences economic growth. The paper highlights many areas needing additional research"--NBER website

Comparative National Balance Sheets PDF Author: Raymond W. Goldsmith
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226301532
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
Raymond W. Goldsmith has combined his experience, good sense, and flair with figures to construct this groundbreaking comparative study of the balance sheets of twenty of the largest nations. A pioneer in the field of national accounts, Goldsmith now presents a work that will be a valuable tool in tracking the economic progress of and between nations. The majority of the balance sheets were created especially for this project, their components gleaned from fragmentary and heterogeneous data. There are approximately 3,500 entries, each measuring the value of one type of tangible or financial asset or liability at a given date. Goldsmith's estimates are keyed to fifteen benchmark dates in the economic progress of the cited nations, and for twelve nations he was able to construct balance sheets dating back to the nineteenth century or earlier. Combined, worldwide balance sheet are included for 1950 and 1978. Comparative National Balance Sheets will provide an essential basis for the quantitative analysis of the long-term financial development of these nations. In addition to national balance sheets for all large countries except Brazil and China, sectoral balance sheets for France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, and the United States in the postwar period are also included.

Book Description
This paper empirically reassesses the long-debated relationship between financial structure and economic growth. Specifically, we examine whether the effect of financial structure on economic growth is affected by the financial structure disproportion, banking crisis, economic volatility, and level of financial development. We employ the generalized method of moments estimation to a large panel of 100 countries over the 1971-2015 period. Although the main result supports market-based view, the positive effect of stock market development relative to banking system decreases significantly if financial structure is unbalanced. Our findings are robust to a variety of sensitivity check, including different measures of financial structure, periods, and model specifications.
