The Acquisition of Complex Sentences
Author: Holger Diessel
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139454080
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 244
Book Description
This book presents a comprehensive study of how children acquire complex sentences. Drawing on observational data from English-speaking children aged 2 to 5, Holger Diessel investigates the acquisition of infinitival and participial complement clauses, finite complement clauses, finite and nonfinite relative clauses, adverbial clauses, and coordinate clauses. His investigation shows that the development of complex sentences originates from simple non-embedded sentences and that two different developmental pathways can be distinguished: complex sentences including complement and relative clauses evolve from simple sentences that are gradually expanded to multiple-clause constructions, and complex sentences including adverbial and coordinate clauses develop from simple sentences that are integrated in a specific biclausal unit. He argues that the acquisition process is determined by a variety of factors: the frequency of the various complex sentences in the ambient language, the semantic and syntactic complexity of the emerging constructions, the communicative functions of complex sentences, and the social-cognitive development of the child.

Intervention Effects in Sentence Processing
Author: Sandra Villata
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1036403505
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 181
Book Description
Tailored for scholars and researchers in linguistics, psycholinguistics, and cognitive science, this monograph embarks on an in-depth exploration of the intriguing realm of long-distance dependencies in human language. These dependencies exhibit a compelling duality: they are unbounded, as they extend across an arbitrary number of words, yet they are constrained by the grammar. Historically, linguists and psycholinguists have pursued distinct paths to account for the intricacies of these dependencies. Bridging these traditions together, this monograph leverages the concept of similarity, focusing on two canonical phenomena in theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistics: wh-islands and agreement attraction. These serve as test cases for an extensive empirical and theoretical investigation, unraveling the interplay between formal linguistic properties and memory operations.

Explicit and Implicit Prosody in Sentence Processing
Author: Lyn Frazier
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319129619
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 309
Book Description
Top researchers in prosody and psycholinguistics present their research and their views on the role of prosody in processing speech and also its role in reading. The volume characterizes the state of the art in an important area of psycholinguistics. How are general constraints on prosody (‘timing’) and intonation (‘melody’) used to constrain the parsing and interpretation of spoken language? How are they used to assign a default prosody/intonation in silent reading, and more generally what is the role of phonology in reading? Prosody and intonation interact with phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics and thus are at the very core of language processes.

Understanding Language
Author: Dominic W. Massaro
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483258289
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 452
Book Description
Understanding Language: An Information-Processing Analysis of Speech Perception, Reading, and Psycholinguistics focuses on the progress of approaches, principles, and practices involved in speech perception, reading, and psycholinguistics. The selection first offers information on language and information processing, articulatory and acoustic characteristics of speech sounds, and acoustic features in speech perception. Discussions focus on vowel and consonant recognition, production of speech sounds, general acoustic properties and occurrence of speech sounds, vowel phonemes of English, and information, auditory, and visual information processing. The text then examines preperceptual images, processing time, and perceptual units in speech perception, theories of perception, and visual features, preperceptual storage, and processing time in reading. Topics include processing time, visual features, summary of information-processing analysis of speech perception, role of linguistic structure in model building, and preperceptual images and processing time. The manuscript takes a look at an analysis of psychological studies of grammar, word and phrase recognition in speech processing, and linguistic theory and information processing, including psychological function of certain transformation rules, psychological reality of constituent structure, and linguistics and psychology. The selection is a vital source of data for researchers interested in speech perception, reading, and psycholinguistics.
