Book Description
The orbits of Earth satellites with perigee heights less than 600km are liable to be appreciably perturbed by the aerodynamic forces resulting from winds in the upper atmosphere, and analysis of the changes in the orbits provides a method of determining zonal (west-to-east) and meridional (north-to-south) winds. The theory hitherto used has been developed for orbits of eccentricity e 0.2. Here we develop the theory for the effect of zonal and meridional winds on the inclination i and right ascension of the node omega for satellites in orbits with e 0.2 moving in an oblate atmosphere. The results are expressed in terms of the change in orbital period, which is accurately known for actual satellites, so that the equations are independent of variations in air density and satellite cross-sectional area.

The effect of a meridional wind on a satellite orbit

The effect of a meridional wind on a satellite orbit PDF Author: D. G. King-Hele

Book Description
In this paper theoretical formulae are derived which show the effect of a meridional (south-to-north) wind on a satellite orbit of eccentricity less than 0.2. The aerodynamic force acting on the satellite, which is normally important only over a small section of the orbit near perigee, is assumed to be in the direction opposite to the satellite's motion relative to the ambient air, so that meridional motion of the upper atmosphere slightly alters the direction of the drag. The resulting changes in the satellite's orbital inclination and the right ascension of the node are evaluated. For a satellite whose perigee remains near the equator, a consistent meridional wind of 100 metres/sec in the vicinity of perigee can change the orbital inclination by 0.02 deg. as the orbital period decreases by 10 min; but when perigee moves widely, the effect is generally much smaller. Part III of this series of papers developed the theory of high eccentricity orbits (e> 0.2) in an atmosphere having an exponential variation of air density with height, that is, with the density scale height H taken as constant. Part IV derived the appropriate theory for low-eccentricity orbits (e

Book Description
Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 18 contains literature published in 1976 and received before March 1, 1977; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included.
