Agrarian Landscapes in Transition researches human interaction with the earth. With hundreds of acres of agricultural land going out of production every day, the introduction, spread, and abandonment of agriculture represents the most pervasive alteration of the Earth's environment for several thousand years. What happens when humans impose their spatial and temporal signatures on ecological regimes, and how does this manipulation affect the earth and nature's desire for equilibrium? Studies were conducted at six Long Term Ecological Research sites within the US, including New England, the Appalachian Mountains, Colorado, Michigan, Kansas, and Arizona. While each site has its own unique agricultural history, patterns emerge that help make sense of how our actions have affected the earth, and how the earth pushes back. The book addresses how human activities influence the spatial and temporal structures of agrarian landscapes, and how this varies over time and across biogeographic regions. It also looks at the ecological and environmental consequences of the resulting structural changes, the human responses to these changes, and how these responses drive further changes in agrarian landscapes. The time frames studied include the ecology of the earth before human interaction, pre-European human interaction during the rise and fall of agricultural land use, and finally the biological and cultural response to the abandonment of farming, due to complete abandonment or a land-use change such as urbanization.

The largest intact remnant of the tallgrass prairie, the Flint Hills ecoregion, is currently under threat from the invasive weed sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata [Dumont] G. Don; SL). The objectives of this research were to evaluate the efficacy of late-season prescribed burning and fall herbicide application, alone and in concert, for comprehensive control of sericea lespedeza and to assess their broader treatment impacts on native plant communities. A 31-ha native tallgrass pasture with a light to moderate infestation of SL was divided into 16 subunits for this experiment. Each subunit was randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: negative control, spray-only, burn-only, or burn-plus-spray. A prescribed burn was conducted on burn-only and burn-plus-spray subunits in early September 2016. Following the re-emergence of SL, spray-only and burn-plus-spray subunits received a broadcast application of metsulfuron methyl (Escort XP, DuPont, Wilmington, DE) at a rate of 70.1 g ˖ ha−1 in late September. Frequency and vigor of SL, total forage biomass, soil cover, and plant species composition were measured along permanent 100-m transects in each subunit prior to treatment application and again 12 mo later, in 2017 (i.e., 1 YAT). In 30 x 30-cm plots at 1-m intervals along each transect, the presence or absence of SL was noted. Where SL was present, crown maturity and maximum stem length of the SL plant nearest to the transect were recorded. Presence of multiple stems in plots was also recorded. Prior to treatment application, SL comprised 1 ± 2.0% of total basal cover and was not different between treatments (P = 0.38). One YAT, SL was more abundant (P ≤ 0.02) in negative control subunits than in spray-only, burn-only, or burn-plus-spray subunits, which were not different (P ≥ 0.95) from one another. Aerial frequency of SL, abundance of mature SL crowns, and incidence of plots with multiple SL stems were greatest (P ≤ 0.03) for negative controls, although not different (P ≥ 0.50) between the other 3 treatments. Sericea lespedeza (SL; Lespedeza cuneata) is classified as an invasive plant throughout the Great Plains. It infests over 600,000 acres in Kansas. Increasing grazing pressure on SL may reduce seed production and slow the spread of the plant; however, intake of SL by grazing beef cattle is poor, due to the presence of tannins in the plant. Condensed tannins reduce protein digestion by ruminants and may also decrease plant palatability. Detailed study of the appetite-suppressing effects of SL under controlled conditions is essential in order to develop appropriate strategies to increase grazing pressure on this plant. Such information could lead to a degree of biological control of this noxious weed using domestic herbivores. We compared intakes of tallgrass prairie hay by beef cows when hay was either uncontaminated or heavily contaminated by SL. Beef cows fed contaminated hay exhibited a profound aversion to compared to similar uncontaminated hay. Furthermore, differences in voluntary DMI between contaminated and uncontaminated hays of similar chemical composition were manifested rapidly after introduction of contaminated hay into beef cow diets. Supplementation with corn steep liquor (CSL) increased tolerance of beef cows for SL. It ameliorated the negative consequences of tannin consumption in a dose-dependent manner when fed to beef cows in confinement. The beef cows in our study had only limited opportunity to selectively avoid SL because it was offered in chopped form and in a mixture with other forage species. It was unknown if beef cattle supplemented with CSL would readily consume forage contaminated by SL when uncontaminated forage was available simultaneously. Therefore, we examined the effects of CSL fed to beef cows on voluntary selection of tallgrass prairie hay contaminated by SL when uncontaminated tallgrass prairie hay was also available. Supplemental CSL (0.6 kg DM/d) increased both acceptance of and tolerance for SL by beef cows. It ameliorated some of the negative consequences of tannin consumption on digestible DM intake. In addition, voluntary consumption of SL-contaminated forage increased by 25% in supplemented vs. unsupplemented beef cows. It is unknown if supplemental CSL can promote voluntary selection of actively-growing SL by beef cattle grazing native rangeland in the Kansas Flint Hills.
