Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the United States During recent years there has been much written and much said about making the study of history and civics in the ele mentary schools something more than committing to memory dates, facts and events. Many newspapers and educational journals and many of those educators Who talk publicly on school questions have criticised severely the results secured from the time devoted to history and civics in the grammar schools. The method used and the lack of proper preparation on the part of the teacher have been held responsible for the poor results secured in these subjects. It has been customary to hold the teacher responsible for the method used and for her poor preparation, and thus to place the entire blame on her. Many have promptly and justly replied that they cannot be expected to expend from two to three thousand dollars in securing a higher education for the purpose of receiving the small salaries paid in the elementary schools. They have also replied - and this is even more to the point - that not being specialists in history and civics, they cannot, With any degree of success, teach these subjects by the topical method When every grammar school history text-book in print adopts, almost entirely, the cut and-dried chronological-event method. In relation to all these conditions, special attention is called to the fact that in this book the topical treatment is used Without any reserve What ever. No teacher can use this book as a text-book and use any other than the topical method, and no pupil can study this book without becoming interested in the real spirit of our history and having cultivated in him the desire to perform to the best of his ability the duties of American citizenship. Book Description
Excerpt from Abridged History of the United States: Or Republic of America The leading objects of the author of this work, have been to give the events of the history with clearness and accuracy; with such illustrations of time and place addressed to the eye, as shall secure their retention in the memory; and, at the same time, with such an order of arrangement, as will enable the mind to recall, at need, what it thus retains. This we regard as important, not only with respect to this particular study; but as rightly laying out the ground-plan of the intellect, so far as the whole range of history is concerned. We have endeavoured to make the book convenient, - by side notes with dates, - by numbered paragraphs of suitable length for reading classes, - and by questions on each paragraph, placed at the bottom of the page. These questions are so put, that youthful teachers may avail themselves of the author's long experience, to acquire a manner of questioning, which, while it is not obscure, will yet oblige the pupil to think, and which will bring into relief prominent points. We have, indeed, been desirous to cultivate the memory, the intellect, and the taste. But much more anxious have we been to sow the seeds of virtue, by showing the good in such amiable lights, that the youthful heart shall kindle into desires of imitation. And we have been careful to give clear conceptions of those deeds, which are proper to imitate; while, with regard to bad actions, we have, as far as possible, given the result, rather than the detail. Book Description
Excerpt from "Blackwood's" History of the United States The Spectator tells us that the ordinary untraveled American has clearly never realized that the old country looks with intense pride and sympathy on the splendid daughter-state, which only goes to prove how very ordi nary and untraveled the most of us are, and how difficult it is for us to keep pace with the changing views of the step-mother-country. In January, 1862, the editor asks, What despotism has displayed so little moderation in prosperity, so little dignity in adversity, less self control, less wisdom in coun cil, less courage in the field P. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the United States, Vol. 1 of 4 Dear People op the United States: - By this, my Preface, I offer to you a New History of your country - and mine. The work is presented in the form of an abridged narrative. My reasons for such a venture are brief, but chief among them is the fact that, to every American citizen some knowledge of the history of his country is indispensable, and the attainment of that knowledge ought to be made easy and delightful. This history is intended for the average American; for the man of business who has neither time nor disposition to plod through ten or twenty volumes of elaborate historical dissertation; for the practical man of the shop, the counter, and the plough. The work is dedicated to the household and the library of the working man. It is inscribed to the father, the mother, the son, and the daughter of the American family. If father, mother, son, and daughter shall love their country better - if they shall understand more clearly and appreciate more fully the founding, progress, and growth of liberty in the New World the author will be abundantly repaid. In the preparation of the work the following objects have been kept in view: I. To give an accurate and spirited Narrative of the principal events in our National history from the aboriginal times to the present day. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the United States: Or Republic of America AT 9. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness.
